Day Two Hundred and Ninety One

Tuesday

Spent the morning dis-assembling the wardrobes in our room and packing them up. I also went to pick up the tyre which had been fixed, got the wheel put back on the car too which was a result.

Did one run over to Newtown, was nice to find a new home card in the postbox there from the folks, thank you very much.

Came home had some lunch and then loaded the car with the wardrobes and other bits we will store at Kate's folks. Drove over in a very heavy car and picked up Kate from work, we then went to Willoughby and dropped off the stuff.

Came home to Glebe and had some dinner and off for an early night. We have to go to Kate's Aunts Funeral tomorrow so trying to relax and sleep a bit tonight. We seem to have been going non stop for last few weeks.

It's getting a bit more like winter here, its rained all day, its getting darker earlier and earlier, reminds me of the first weeks when we arrived back in June.

Day Two Hundred and Ninety

My Birthday...!

Was awoken by Kate with a lovely chocolate muffin for brekkie (even had a candle on which was very thoughtful). Kate gave me some lovely presents and I dragged myself out of bed at 7.30 to have a Skype call with folks.

I opened their lovely presents on the video call, it was nice to be able to share them moment using the power of the internet.

Kate made her way to work.

During the morning I made three trips to Newtown with the car full of stuff, managed to move most of the small furniture items and some boxes.

I then met Kate in St.Leonards for a quick Thai lunch which was nice.

In the afternoon I made a further trip to Newtown, alas when I got out of the car on arrival I could hear a hissing noise from car, I proceeded to watch the front tyre deflate. I unloaded the car and then set about changing the wheel, its a crap grubby job.

After that I went to tyre place and left my punctured wheel for repair over night, cost 38 bucks, not bad.

Back to Glebe, spoke to my sister who sent a job lot of of m&S Percy Pigs, happy days! Soon after Kate came home.

In the evening we walked across to the dogs, I won on the first race and then proceeded to lose most of the night. I threw everything I had (17.50) on the last race on a random dog which came in first giving me 66 bucks return, all in about even at the end of the day.

Came home and slept!

Sunday 28 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Nine

After getting to bed at 1am we got up a little late, well I was up by 8.30, I awoke Kate just after 10am.

Bill and Carol came over at lunchtime and helped us start to pack up stuff for the move this week.

Later in the afternoon we all drove over to the new flat so they could see it.

We all came back to Glebe and Bill and Carol very generously gave me a Leatherman for my birthday (tomorrow).

Nola and Brian stopped by and picked up the gas heater they lent us. We have reverse cycle air con in new place so no need for it anymore.

In the evening we had a Chinese takeaway and we also spoke to Chris and Hannah who gave me a DVD for my birthday.

In between everything we've been sorting stuff out and packing up.

Off to bed for an early start to speak to folks at 7.30.

Saturday 27 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Eight

The weekend

We got up and went to Newtown to collect the keys for the new flat. After a bit of a mix up we finally got hold of our keys. After a quick visit to Caroline to drop off our Sydney Swan passes (we are not going to the first game of the season tonight at Homebush so someone else had them) we finally went to our new flat.

It was good to get in there and get a real feel for the place and start planning how we'll fit our stuff in there.

We came back to Glebe and spent time sorting out stuff in preparation for the move. I also spent a painful 15 minutes on the phone Foxtel (UK equivalent is Sky TV) trying to organise the transfer to the new flat, the numpty at the call centre clearly didn't understand the basic concept of reading a calender.

In the evening we went for dinner at Wolfies with Bill and Carol. It was good to be in the city during Earth Hour and we saw the lights go off on the Opera House and Bridge.

Pics are here

http://www.smh.com.au/photogallery/environment/the-biggest-turnoff/20100327-r4bi.html

Was quite funny to see them launch 20 mins of fireworks after, probably un-offsetting the carbon saved by turning the lights out.

We all came back to Glebe and watched the recorded game of Swans playing St Kilda.

Friday 26 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Seven

Friday

My final day at Caritas, did very little there all day and after a pub lunch I left by 3.15. Was a good gig while it lasted and gave us a bit of cash to pay the rent.

Came home and started sorting stuff for the house move, we collect the keys to the new place tomorrow.

Very hot in Sydney today.

Thursday 25 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Six

Today we sadly lost Kate's Aunt Marion to cancer.

I only had the privilege of meeting Marion a few times, once in London and a couple of times here in Australia.

I personally have wonderful memories of Marion such as the time we met in London and she was pushing baby Finlay around Kew gardens in the cold, she had a firm grip on that baby pram and wasn't letting go!

We met a couple of other times and I found her to be so welcoming and dare I say it the grown up one out of Bill, Barbara and Marion.

It sounds like it was a fairly peaceful end for which we are all thankful.

Kate and I went to Willoughby after work to be with the family, these times are never easy but it all went as could be expected.

In the evening Bill, Carol, Barbara, Kate and I went for a Thai dinner nearby Willoughby. This was nice and it was wonderful to hear the stories from the past of when Bill and his sisters were kids, some of the stuff they got up to etc, it is nice to celebrate the good times on days like this. I felt I learnt a great deal about the Colhoun family history in those few short hours over dinner.

Dedicated to Marion 1935 - 2010.

Wednesday 24 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Five

Wednesday

A day at work, it's really winding down now at Caritas, wish it would just be over, still only four more days to go.

After work I picked Kate up to go over to her folks for dinner. I got to have a peek at the PCFA office as everyone else had gone by the time I picked up Kate. I'm not sure I approve of the life size poster next to her desk of Pat Rafter in his underpants but there you go!

I've not mentioned it so far on my blog but Kate's Aunt Marion is unfortunately very ill so we are spending more time with Kate's folks at the moment. I wont go into details on my blog as I don't feel it's really appropriate but we are all rallying around the extended family at this time.

We just come home, and off to bed.

Tomorrow we have a BBQ at work.

Tuesday 23 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Four

Back to Caritas, only 3 days to go. A quiet day there not doing too much.

Drove to St.Leonards and picked up Kate. Cooked Veal for dinner which was nice.

A quiet night at home, Kate spoke to her folks on phone for a bit.

As I say not a great deal to report today.

Monday 22 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Three

Monday

Got up and drove Kate across to the North Shore and work. Drove myself back and spent the morning sorting out stuff in the house. It's amazing the amount of stuff we brought from UK which we didn't need to to, needless to say I've chucked out a few bits and pieces today.

Went to the bank at lunchtime to get our deposit check for months rent and bond on new place. Have to say I'm continually delighted at the superb service you get in the banks here, genuine conversation from the lady behind the counter, interest in what we were doing, where we were moving etc. Not just trivial chat but proper interest.

and local area guide which was nice. When we signed and collected the keys on this place in the estate Drove back to the North Shore again to pick up Kate and we drove straight to real estate agent in Newtown to sign lease. Again this real estate agent was a breath of fresh air compared to poeple we are with now, more laid back and certainly more organised. even gave us a NewtownGlebeagent couldn't have given two s#its about us once they had their cash, will be glad to see the back of them.

We collect keys on new place on Saturday.

We came home and had dinner and tried to think about all the stuff we have to do before now and moving. I also got my contract through from Oxfam so will need to send all that paperwork back too.

Bumper post day as I also got folks pack plus some birthday cards and other stuff.

Sunday 21 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty Two

Sunday

A relaxing day around the house, we went to the cafe in Glebe for brekkie and Sunday morning paper reading.

After that I went to Bunnings to get a load of stuff to knock up a trolley to help us move stuff over next few weeks. I'm quite happy with my handiwork after an hour.

We went shopping up at Broadway in the afternoon.

In the evening we spoke to folks and then sister on Skype which was all good.

Friday 19 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighty One

Saturday

A quiet day at home, we have started sorting out our stuff in preparation to move. Kate went shopping with her mum over at Chatswood. Apparently it's someones birthday soon.

Made my way over to Willoughby to meet them all for dinner. Collected a load of boxes from Kate's folks store room at the same time.

Fantastic day weather wise in Sydney, very warm and wonderful blue skies.

Got tipped off about the Smithy clip from Sport relief, have to say you still cant beat British Comedy, it's the best in the world. Added YouTube clip below.

Day Two Hundred and Eighty

Fr Fr Friday.....

A day at work, was interesting sitting through some presentations form people from Papa New Guinea, these people have no electricity in their villages so puts things in perspective somewhat.

Not much else to report, glad it's Friday and we can chill out over the weekend.

Thursday 18 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Nine

A rude awakening...

Mobile started ringing at 3am, couldn't really make sense what was happening until we finally came round, by then it was too late. Anyway one voicemail later and some recruitment agent in UK was trying to get me. Must be pretty crap agent if they haven't at least looked at Linked In first.

Second awakening at normal time and it was off to work. Spent a day data inputting, fun fun fun. Talked to Oxfam and already booking in meetings for my first day there on 6th.

Kate got in late after an event at Kirribilli House.

Not much else to report.

Wednesday 17 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Eight

Got up, walked to estate agent and gave notice on our house in Glebe. 3 weeks form now we'll be out of here formally.

Seems many others with that real estate agent are on move after a spate of rent hikes from what I could gather form the person there.

Did a slow day at Caritas.

Came home, spoke to folks on skype and didn't do much else.

Tuesday 16 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Seven

We are on the move...

We applied for a flat today and by lunchtime our application was approved. By mid afternoon the holding deposit was paid. We will sign a lease starting 27th March.

We are off to Newtown.

We'll be living on King St, very reminiscent of the Tooting/Balham High Road in London. We'll be saving 180 dollars a week in rent, which is best part of 10K a year saved. The flat is first floor one bedroom and is also brand new which is great as it's fresh and clean.

It's closer to work and less than 2 mins to a mainline railway station (St.Peters)

I've added pics of place below.

So next few weeks will involve all the joys of moving, plus probably having strangers tramp around our place as real estate agents try and fill our place.

We give notice on our existing Glebe place tomorrow.

Lots of change, new job starting in 3 weeks, new flat, new area to live...all change!

Kate seems to be feeling a lot better too.

Monday 15 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Six

A day off work

I drove Kate to work, the joys of crawling across Sydney Harbour Bridge in traffic, you don't see that on the postcards!

Came home and washed and waxed the car. Sorted loads of stuff out around the house.

In the afternoon I picked up Kate from Dentist, seems she has bad infection around her wisdom teeth. Dentist prescribed super antibiotics to clear it. she'll need further trips after infection has cleared for next steps.

It's good to know what has been causing her pain for last week.

Tonight we filled in all the application forms for flat we are going to try and move too. Once it's signed and sealed I'll add pics here.

Got my flight to Melbourne booked by Oxfam for Trailwalker when i start new job. Still waiting on the contract paperwork.

I nice box arrived from Blighty (basingstoke) which was promptly hidden by Kate, must be someones birthday in a couple of weeks...

Finally the news from Sydney is bonkers, media are obsessed by Lara Bingle and Michale Clarkes break up, just see smh.com.au for more. The main evening news was dominated by it as leading story, over things like deaths and hospital shortages etc..crazy Oz...

Sunday 14 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Five

Happy Mothers Day to my lovely mother!

A quiet day at home, Kate still has a problem with her teeth so wasnt feeling the greatest.

We went over to Willoughby for dinner, had a good Skype call with folks and then headed home.

Saturday 13 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Four

A day spent driving up and down King St Newtown....

We got up and went to view a number of apartments in and around Newtown and Camperdown. The first one we saw we both really liked, its fairly new, clean and quite spacious.

The second two were horrible, the second was very small and grubby, the third felt like a prison block with landings and small windows.

We'll have a think over Sunday as to whether to go for first one.

After that we went for an afternoon BBQ at Caroline and Johns, was nice to catch up with everyone in Newtown.

Came home and chilled out. Kate's ulcers/swollen gums are still causing her much pain, hopefully the antibiotics will start taking effect and give her some relief.

Friday 12 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Three

Friday

A day at work, kept myself busy and talked about what more there was to do there. Dropped down to 3 or 4 days a week for next 2 weeks and then finish up. Works for me and them.

Came home via almost all the estate agents in Newtown and Glebe to collect the rental lists. We've found a few possibles to view in the morning.

Cooked omelettes for dinner, spoke to Kates folks and off to bed now.

Thursday 11 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy Two

Thursday

Not a great deal to report, got up and went to work and then picked Kate up from work and made our way over to Willoughby for dinner.

Spent some time researching properties on line, will probably go and view some rental places on Saturday.

Writing this in Willoughby, will head home soon.

Corey Haim of Lost Boys fame pegged it today, shame, is one of my favourite movies.

Wednesday 10 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy One

Wednesday

A quiet day at work, not a great deal to report really. They were having a cake sale there all day and I resisted everything.

Came home at about 5 and waited for Kate.

Kate came home, we had dinner and spoke to folks on Skype.

Not much else, in headline news in Sydney, the elephant at Taronga had another baby, despite them saying it was deceased 2 days ago...

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/just-outstanding-miracle-baby-elephant-takes-first-steps-20100310-pyun.html

Tuesday 9 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventy

A quiet day at work, will have to think about how longer to keep it going. Nipped to post office on way to work to pick up a parcel for Kate.

After work came home and started cooking the dinner. Kate came home and opened her parcel, it was a present form Pru for her birthday. In there was also some Percy Pig sweeties from M&S for me, Pru is a legend.

Any other readers are welcome to send UK confectionery this way! (sweets are known as lollies down under by the way)

Monday 8 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Nine

Back to reality

Back to work for Monday, not really a great deal going on, just a few admin things and writing some proposals on how to build the event next year.

Drove to the North shore to pick up Kate from work and we did some food shopping at WooliesNorthbridge for a change.

We came home, had some dinner and chilled out.

Spent time reading the pack form England and admiring the latest postcard Alvin has created.

Sunday 7 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Eight

Sunday

We awoke fairly early and got up and headed to restaurant for brekkie. We came back to room and sorted all our stuff out and checked out. We drove back to Hopewood to meet Kate's folks and Chris and Hannah.

We helped with the final clear up after wedding and then all drove over to Hannah's parents house for Brunch/Tea.

It was nice to have a post wedding catch up.

As the afternoon disappeared we drove back to Sydney and back to reality. We had a good Skype call with folks and talked them through the pictures on facebook (on Kate's account) and then relaxed and went to bed fairly early.

Saturday 6 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Seven

Chris and Hannahs Wedding Day

The big day finally arrived. I got up fairly early and had a cooked brekkie in hotel restaurant. Sorted myself out and headed over to Hopewood to spend a bit of time with Kate's family, I helped Chris and Ryan set up the sound system in the reception room which was a laugh.

Ryan, Chris and I then headed into Bowral for lunch, we took Chris for his last lunch as an unmarried man!

I left them in Bowral and headed back to Hotel to change. Just before three I joined the other wedding guests staying at Briars at reception to catch the bus to the wedding.

We were delivered to Hopewood in good time and I spent time taking pics. Soon enough Hannah arrived and the ceremony was underway, all the girls looked fantastic and the boys scrubbed up well too.

Ceremony done it was onto photo's in the garden, this was a nice break and a chance to catch up with the Colhoun clan.

we then had the reception which was lovely, food was excellent and onto speeches. I had the responsibility of video the speeches which I hope I did well enough.

Then there was dancing, chatting and all round good times.

Chris and Hannah made their way out and we all headed home (well Kate and I went back to Bill and Carols cottage for a nice cuppa) we then drove back to hotel for well earned rest!

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Six

Friday Up and about early getting stuff ready for Bowral and the wedding. I dropped Kate at the hairdressers and drove to Oxfam in Surry Hills briefly to drop back the sandbags I had borrowed from them for the Caritas events. Talked briefly about the job and that's all looking good, just paperwork now.

Picked up Kate and we came home and picked up our stuff and headed south. We picked up the other Kate (chief Bridesmaid) and headed to Bowral.

We arrived in time for the wedding rehearsal which all went well.
The wedding reception was held at

http://www.hopewoodcountryhouse.com.au/

After the rehearsal was over and Kate and I went our separate ways, Kate went to Hannah's parents house and I checked into our hotel

http://www.briars.com.au/

Later in the evening I joined a family dinner with Bill, Carol, Chris, Jan (Carol's sister), Kevin (Jan's husband), Ryan (best man), Edward (Hannah's cousin) and Kathryn (Edwards partner).

We went to a local restaurant in Bowral

http://www.miettas.com.au/Australia/New_South_Wales/Bowral/Onesta_Cucina.html

Food was good and company excellent. We all went our separate ways for early nights before the big day.

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Five

A superb start to the day, I managed to slip and slide on my arse down the stairs, coming to a stop by my big toe hitting the wall at the bottom. Nothing broken but pride a little knocked. I always said those stairs were dodgy. of course carrying the washing basket down with both hands and with my PJ's sagging under my feet probably didnt help me too much.

Went to work and didn't do too much, phoned an estate agent about a flat we'd seen but they wont show it until Saturday so we'll prob miss it, I'll call agent on Monday in case no one signs it up after inspection.

Came home, and then drove to Chatswood to meet Kate and her mum who were having their nails done for wedding on Saturday . We picked up a few other bits and pieces then headed back to Willoughby for dinner. Had a phone call with Chris and Hannah who both sound very relaxed which is good.

Came home at 10 and have been ironing and sorting out stuff for wedding. We drive to Bowral tomorrow.

There may well be some interruption to blog service until Sunday I'm afraid dear readers.

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Four

Wednesday

A fairly quiet day at work, nothing too stressful. Grabbed some shopping on way home and then cooked a dinner of sausages and salad. Caught up with TV and then went to bed.

An interesting video can be found here about Trailwalker which will take up much of my life over next six months (working on not participating in)

Tuesday 2 March 2010

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Three

A regular day at work, did a lot of heavy lifting sorting out all the junk at work, seems no one has ever done it since they have been in that office for over 2 years.

Had a call from recruitment agent to let me know I hadn't got the Can Too job, well it had been offered to an internal candidate and it was likely they would take it.

Ive spoken to my buddies at Oxfam and lined up a six month contract starting in April. Still need to do the paperwork so it's not in the bag but looking very good. The Irish Girl who did the job last year emailed me to say she had heard I had taken the job so that could have only come from the Oxfam folks themselves so I think we are good.

Spoke to Caritas and they want me to stay on as long as poss, so happy days, money coming in ad job lined up until September.

Came home and then jumped on tram to Pyrmont Bay. went to meet a load of ex Symbianites which was good, was nice to catch up with people, but I have to say I don't miss it at all. Pic of those there is below....

Day Two Hundred and Sixty Two

Monday

Not a great deal to report, a quiet day at the office. Weather in Sydney has got worse, it's now officially Autumn.

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/march-marks-clear-change-from-sticky-days-of-summer-20100301-pciq.html

Some shopping on way home and chilled out this evening.

Tomorrow night I'm catching up with ex colleagues who are attending this
