Day One Hundred and Seventy One

Day One Hundred and Seventy One - Monday 30th November

A day spent home alone looking for jobs, blitzed job sites, followed up a few leads from friends, reviewed CV, sent to some agencies.

All we can do really is just plough on. It's a bit demotivating as days, weeks and month pass but I'm sure something will come my way soon. same goes for Kate.

Kate was at Vaucluse again today, she arrived home about 6.

Not much else to report today!

Day One Hundred and Seventy

A lazy day around the house and a brief bit of shopping. Bought some Christmas stuff at Broadway, alas the 2m high inflatable Santa for our front balcony was out of stock at the cheapo shop. Our tackiness ambitions will have to wait another year (I'm joking by the way).

Kate cooked a superb pasta dinner (a Donna Hay recipe, those in blighty should check her out, Oz's answer to Delia Smith).

Watched some DVD's.

Tomorrow Kate is at work and I plough on with jobs, agencies etc etc.

Interesting post by Nick today...

Day One Hundred and Sixty Nine

Saturday

We both got up late (well 10am which is late for me) and lazed around house with brekkie and papers. After lunch we went over to Chatswood and met Kates folks. We then went over to their house for dinner. Had a good call with Chris and Hannah, seems like a long time since we spoke to them.

Watched Marley and Me movie too, which was not to bad actually, easy entertainment whichdidn't take much brain power. Just driven home at midnight and knocking out the blog.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Eight

Friday

Kate went to work all day and I stayed home looking at jobs. I did venture out briefly to pick up a few things and then back to the house. It was over 30 degrees so didn't hang about outside too long!

Spent some time booking in appoinments at wedding venues too and also spoke to folks in NZ briefly

After Kate got home we went over to Oxford St to meet with Pru, Mike, Ben etc for dinner. We had Vietnamese here

http://www.saigonbay.com.au/

After dinner we hit a number of bars in the area. Oxford St is predominately a gay area and it was funny seeing the drag entertainment in a couple of the bars. We came home about 1am.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Seven

Had an invite to the Joneses Christmas bash, first one I'll have missed for a long time but down under for Christmas this year!

We got up and went for a cycle around Blackwattle Bay, we both needed some time out form searching through seek.com.au. It was hot but we chucked an aerobie around for a while as well.

We came back and did some more job hunting, I applied for one and Kate spotted a few she will go for.

It's warming up here in Oz, been sunny most of the week and house is starting to warm up quite a bit, fans are on more and more these days. Shouldn't complain, must be accused of being a whinging Pome.

We went to the Rose in Erskenville this evening for pub trivia night, we didn't win alas.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Six

A day around the house, mainly spent job hunting online, we took it in turns to apply for various roles. It's getting to be a bit of a drag applying for roles, hearing nothing and going for the next thing. I've lost count on how many we've applied for now.

We took some time out and walked to the fish market to get some fruit etc.

Still may have a lead out of one of them lets see. We had a quick bite to eat up the pub in the evening and then vegged in front of TV in evening.

Tuesday 24 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Five

A day spent looking at jobs and hitting the shops. We went to Myer and bought a few bits and pieces. Had a quick Japanese meal at the place up the road. Not a great deal else to report today.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Four

Up early to drive Alvin and Crystal to the airport, dropped them off successfully and headed home. A quiet day around the house looking at jobs etc. Not too much more to report.

Alas back in UK my sisters and her husbands cat Tabs lost her little fight for life and went on to better things.

Sunday 22 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Three

A quiet day, got up late and didnt do much during morning. It's hot here, 40 degrees today. Bill and Carol came over and we bent out some of the metal on car so Bill could drive it home.

In the afternoon we stayed around house trying to stay cool.

This evening we went ot see pearl Jam at the Sydney Football Stadium near the SCG. Was hot but a really good gig. Im impressed with integrated transport like the buses to and from Central station. We were there and back in under half an hour each way. A few pics...

Day One Hundred and Sixty Two

Saturday

A day in Melbourne. We got up and Kate and I went round to a coffee shop for brekkie, it wasn't the best but it did the job.

We checked out and then we all headed over to the Albert Park to see the Formula 1 facilities. Was a bit of a trek around the lake but we got there in the end. Good to see the stuff again and Alv was happy to see it all.

We then headed back the city. We did some shopping and lunch in Melbourne Central and then took a tram to Fed Square and Flinders St station.

A bit more time spent in Melbourne and then we drove back to airport, dropped the hire car and checked in.

A good flight back, a bit bumpy and slightly late getting away. We were met by Bil and Carol at the airport and got home about 10 o'clock.

A nice break to Melbourne all round.

Day One Hundred and Sixty One

We up and away early and drove the remainder of the Great Ocean Road. We stopped at a number of places along the way including the 12 Apostles and London Bridge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Apostles_%28Victoria%29

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Arch

We also tried to visit Cape Otway Lighthouse but it was closed due to the filming of some movie but it was OK because they had knocked 3 dollars of the already 16 dollar price to walk up to the lighthouse as a result. Alas we didn't even get the chance to pay the 50 bucks to climb the lighthouse. A bargain at twice the price, not, needless to say we were not too worried to be saving 54 dollars and not walking to somewhere 100m from the lighthouse.

One bonus of driving out to the lighthouse was the chance encounter the wildlife, as you can see from the pics below we got lucky!

As we ended the GOR, we then drove back to Melbourne, a long drive across the plains, we made good time and got into Melbourne about 6. We stayed in Carlton, near where I worked at Oxfam.

Had a superb Italian meal nearby, again a recommendation from the Stewards Restaurant Blog Australia 2009

Whats that Skippy, little Johnnys stuck in the billabong?

Tough Day

12 Apostles

Day One Hundred and Sixty

We got up early in readiness for heading to the airport. We were collected by Bill and off we went to the Airport. Not 100m from leaving the house we were hit by a woman up the road driving out of her drive. We basically crunched in the front of the car. To be fair it's a blind manoeuvre getting out of our drives into the lane behind us but you can edge out slowly so passing cars like us can see you coming, it was just instant and out of nowhere.

At the end of the day no one was hurt which is main thing.

We then had to get to airport as poor Carols car was not drivable. trying to get a taxi at 8am on Bridge Road isn't a goer! We headed for the tram and to central station. We then jumped on a train to the airport.

After that little escapade our travel all went quite smoothly, a simple flight down to Melbourne and then we picked up the hire car no problems.

We then set off for the Great Ocean Road. We had some lunch at a service stop where the woman serving dint understand the concept of service, miserable c#w.

We drove down to Anglesea and Lorne. At Lorne we some snacks and a walk.

We then proceeded to drive to Apollo Bay where we were staying. On route we almost ran a Koala over who decided to cross the road in front of us, unheard of apparently.

We got to our accommodation, it was great, the only 5 star accommodation on the Great Ocean Road, its here

http://www.chocolategannets.com.au/

and I have to say thoroughly recommended if you get a chance.

Kate and I took a walk on beach and then we all went into town to pick up a takeaway of pizzas and fish and chips. A few bevvies and food later it was bed time.

Ouch!

Day One Hundred and Fifty Nine

A day around the house mainly, took folks shopping and then they went for a walk around Blackwattle bay. Kate came home early from work and we all chilled. Went back to Broadway again to buy a new iron after the other one got dropped.

In the evening we headed down to circular quay, met Bill and carol and went to Aria restaurant for dinner. Very nice it was too.

We then went to the Opera House to catch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform. A superb evening!

back at home now writing this before an early start tomorrow to fly to Melbourne and drive the Great Ocean road for a few days!

Day One Hundred and Fifty Eight

Quick update today

Spent most of day at home job hunting, plus got a call to say I hadn't landed the cool Oxfam job I interviewed for last week. Ah well onwards and upwards.

Dinner at home and then we caught up with folks in town who were meeting one of their friends.

Monday 16 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Seven

Monday

We got up and made our way over to Circular Quay on the tram and train. From there we walked up through the Rocks to the Bridge. we walked along the bridge towards north and went in the Pylon museum/exhibition. The pics are shown below.

We then headed back to Circular Quay and had lunch at Wolfies, a firm favourite of the folks. Had a superb steak.

We made our way back to Glebe, chilled for a short time and then wen to the dogs....literally. Just round the corner form here, less than 10 mins walk is the Wentworth Park greyhound stadium, we had a night of gambling and didn't really win much between us all.

Now home and off to bed..

Brixton Academy, I mean some other concert venue...

Up the Bridge

Gone to the dogs...

Day One Hundred and Fifty Six

Sunday

We got up early and headed over to Bondi and Bronte to see the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. There's a few pics below. It was really good but really busy. we were joined by Bill and Carol.

We walked from the direction of Bronte to Bondi and saw most stuff along the way, it was realy busy though, to be expected as it was the last day of it.

We stopped short of Bondi and got lucky by seeing the migrating whales heading back south jumping out of the sea just off shore.

We came home and then went to AB for dinner. We had a good Skype call with Hazel, weird to have folks this end looking back to UK on Skype.

Got a bit sunburnt too!

Not a bad day...

Giddy Up...

Balls to it...

Diamonds are a girls best friend apparently...

What time is it...

Saturday 14 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Five

An easy day today, folks got up and headed into town on their own, we chilled around the house. Grabbed some lunch and waited for folks to get back.

In the evening we went over to Bill and carols for a lovely dinner. We had champagne to celebrate our engagement again and then had a superb roast lamb dinner. We also spoke briefly to Chris and Hannah.

We made our way home, off to bed now, we decided to have an early start to Bronte/Bondi to catch sculptures by the sea exhibition.

Friday 13 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Four

We got up and took the folks shopping around Broadway for some bits and pieces, bought some stuff for lunch and BBQ in evening and came home and relaxed. After lunch we drove down to the Opera House and Circular Quay. Was nice to finally get to tourist ville since being here!

Had an ice cream and watched the ferries come and go. Came home and had a BBQ, all went well I think. After dinner we left the folks at home and went to Newtown to see Pru who was arriving from Hong Kong for 3 weeks back home in Oz.

Was good to catch up with everyone.
Grabbed a taxi home and was in bed by 12.30.

Thursday 12 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Three

The tacky sign I made...

Up and away early to the airport to collect the folks. We waited quite some time, there seemed to be many flights coming through at once.

We did see a couple of camera crews following one of the Aussie cricket team through the arrivals hall. About 5 mins later Leyton Hewett and Bec Cartwright his wife passed through too.

The folks then came through, was great to see them in Sydney, it will give us a chance to show them all the stuff we have talked about over the last 150 days or so.

We drove them back to Glebe and had a cuppa and a good catch up.

Once they had freshened up we took a walk to the fish markets for lunch, that was cool and Alvin was very interested in the activities there.

After lunch we walked to Darling Harbour and bought crystal a hat to avoid the sun.

We took them on the tram home so they knew how that works so they can get about without us if needs be.

An afternoon of scrabble and tea trying to keep them awake so they can nail the jet lag. A biggish thunderstorm just before dinner put paid to sitting in the garden We had dinner and folks finally crashed at about 8.30.

Tomorrow we'll take them shopping and then probably go to circular Quay or something (I've not even been there yet since emigrating to Sydney!).

Wednesday 11 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Two

A busy day, we got up in Willoughby and loaded up the Ute with beds and sofa. We then drove to Barbaras (kate's Aunt) to drop off bed and pick up old one. We then came to Glebe and dropped of the sofa we have taken from Bill and Carols. Once that was all unloaded Bill made his way home.

I then had an interview for a job with Oxfam. I think it went quite well, I should find out next week. The role ties in a great deal with my experience.

Came home and we then proceeded to blitz the house in preparation for the arrival of the folks first thing tomorrow. We have just finished and it's about 11.30! Off to bed and up early to get to airport for 7am...

Tuesday 10 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty One

Our new garden furniture was delivered this morning, it looks really good in the garden, and gives us more space to eat etc. Will also make life easier when the folks arrive on Thursday.

We then had some lunch at Broadway and did some shopping for stuff for folks.

We had to got o the RTA, an experience I relish every time, so Kate could update her license, I tried to do mine but apparently you have to be in the country 6 months continually before they give you a NSW driving licence, so I'll be back there in April...more fun!

We bought some more stuff for Garden in Chatswood and then we are staying at Bill and Carols tonight. We are collecting their old sofa first thing in morning and taking it to ours, so makes sense to be here rather than fighting through traffic across bridge early doors.

Had a lovely chicken satay meal here, and off to bed soon. Heard form folks who have arrived OK in Singapore.

Monday 9 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty

Broadway and We went out an did more shopping for the imminent arrival of the folks on Thursday, went toBunnings out of town.

The weather is really picking up so we just chilled out for rest of day. We were both looking at jobs on web at the same time!

Spoke to folks late in evening to check they were all ready for their departure to Singapore, that was all good.

Not much else to report...

Sunday 8 November 2009

I got up early and went out to collect our BBQ from the shop. Came home and put it together. Bill and carol picked us up and we headed into town. They kindly bought us an engagement present in Myer and then we grabbed some lunch in the QVB.

We came back and all watched the races from Flemington with a cuppa. Bill and Carol went and we chilled out. We went out in car and looked at plants for garden and ended up buying one Fuchsia. I seem to recall they were a favourite of my grandad or Crystal likes em, anyway we have on plant at least.

We came home, had our first BBQ then had a Skype call to home. Just chilling now. Foxtel man could be here from 8am onwards tomorrow so will be hitting the sack soon.

We bought some new towels in Myers too. Good to finally have our own and we can return our borrowed stuff to Bill and Carol too!

Came home and then nipped to Broadway for some dinner stuff. We cooked Risotto together and watched some spooks.

Didn't feel like a Friday, seem all out of whack with days at the moment, still it's the weekend now!

Our foxtel is installed tomorrow too, at last some half decent telly choice!

Thursday 5 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Six

A week until the folks land on Aussie soil! Time seems to be flying, we left UK 4 weeks ago today!

A day around the house mainly, weather has been crap, we both did some job hunting today, looked at a few but I didn't apply for any I saw.

We came over to Willoughby and had a Thai takeaway, did a Skype call with Hazel and watched some telly. Not really a huge amount to write home about today!

Wednesday 4 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Five

A really hot night so it took a while to get to sleep, it didn't really cool down much.

We went for lunch in the rocks with Kate's dad Bill and his sisters Marion and Barbara. Barbara gave us a lovely engagement present of a painting she had done.We had lunch nearby and then left to do some shopping.

I must be becoming an Aussie, I bought myself the obligatory BBQ today. Its very similar to this

Tuesday 3 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Four

Melbourne Cup Day...

Got up early, body clock is still on working time. Did a few mails and stuff during morning. Then Michael came over and we all walked to Darling Harbour to watch the Melbourne Cup Race. Had a few bets on but wont nothing on that race. Should say we had yum cha at the Chinese restaurant at the fish markets on way over which was good.

a bookies within the pub, you can put bets We wondered back towards home and stopped at another pub, its great here the TAB is effectivelyon there and then. Won 65 bucks on another race so probably came out about even.

Wondered home, chilled out and had a skype call with Alv and Crystal...

Monday 2 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Three

Last day In Melbourne. We got up and had some brekkie in the hotel. After checking out we went our separate ways, Kate went to meet her friend Libby for lunch, whilst I went back to the office to wrap up a few last things and take the minibus back to the hire company.

We met each other again and did some shopping around Melbourne and then headed up tot he airport. Had an easy flight back, the plan was less than a third full. Everyone is heading to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. It's much like Grand National, although its a national holiday in Victoria for it, it's all people have been talking abut all week. People here in NSW are talking about it and taking time off too.

We got back to airport and were met by Carol, a quick trip to Willoughby and then home to Glebe for sleep!

Sunday 1 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Two

Sunday

Last day of event. Out of bed at 6.10am...Outside hotel at 6.30 putting kids on bus to station. 8am taking bottles of beer of kids and sending them to have a shower and breakfast. 10am calling rooms, getting keys from hotel management to wake up kids who had drunk a bottle of tequila each until 6am.

12 o clock last kid on bus.

Happy happy event days!

Kate and I wondered round the queen vic markets, then went to Aquarium ( I think Dubai shopping centres have ruined us for aquariums).

Back to hotel for a bit

We then went out for dinner with Pip, who we used to work with at Symbian 2 years ago. Was great to see her and catch up.

We are back at hotel and off to bed.

Day One Hundred and Forty One

Saturday

Back in the office early doors at 8am to print up a few things, then planned to spend day on event at some of the activities. Instead ended up in office laminating pictures and certificates. Thankfully Kate was with me having arrived at lunchtime.

In the evening we went to Middletons office on the 25th floor of the Rialto Tower. Was amazing night with the participants doing performances etc. We got back to hotel at about 10.15. We tried to get some dinner but ended up only being able to get a crepe round the corner. Hit bed about 11.
