Day Two Hundred and One

201....Wednesday 30th December 2009 We got up and drove over to Willoughby to pick up Bill and Carol. We then drove and hour and a half south to Bowral. We were there for Kate and Carol to attend a Kitchen Party for Hannah (as part of the wedding build up). Myself and Chris, Bill and Hannahs dad and his friend Roger went to the local winery for afternoon tea. We wen tot Centennial Vinyard which is about 2 minutes form where Chris and Hannah will marry in March.

It was very nice as you can see from pics below.

We drove home and went to Bill and Carols for dinner and then we watched the Angels and Demons DVD (which was pretty good I have to say) before driving home.

Day Two Hundred

200 Days in Oz...

Had a good day at home, Kate was at work. Got a lot of chores done, did the washing now that it is sunny again. Did a little job searching on line and a few other bits and pieces.

We went up the shops to Broadway, not a pleasant experience, there was no air con there. Managed to get a bargain in the sales and bought a dishwasher.

When Kate got home we went up the AB for a quick dinner making use of their $10 meal deal.

We completed our World puzzle this evening. Had the delights of a speeding ticket notice also today from the government of Victoria after our road trip to the great ocean road, 234 dollars, a bit excessive I think, ho hum.

Tomorrow is a brief trip to the Southern Highlands.

Monday 28 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Nine

Really not much to report today, it's rained most of the day, we have hung out at home making use of Christmas Pressies, watching telly and just relaxing. Kate is off to work tomorrow and I'll do some CV updating.

Sunday 27 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Eight

Sunday

We got up and had some brekkie and before we knew it we were back on our way over to Willoughby. We helped get ready for the arrival of lots of Bills family. All of a sudden everyone arrived and before we knew it there were 33 people in the house.

Was nice to meet more of the extended family and to see Ian and Jess and their new son Finlay again. We saw them many times in London before we left and they head back there on Friday.

After everyone had left we chilled out and had dinner in Willoughby, a bit of TV - Bill and Carol bought a new plasma today, the same model as ours so TV viewing is much improved in Willoughby.

Still grey here, and very muggy, hopefully it will clear up soon!

Oh and Kate started the worlds hardest jigsaw puzzle my folks bought her, she is struggling on with it....

Saturday 26 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Seven

Boxing Day

A full nights sleep with out distraction form Pets, well there was apparently but I slept through it. We got up around 9am and then watched telly most of morning. Showered etc, had a light lunch from bakery and then Chris and Hannah arrived.

We opened the rest of our presents, got lots of good stuff including a body board (short surfboard thing) from Kate so I can even more become an Aussie. Had may generous gifts from the Colhoun family which was very nice.

We had a roast pork dinner with all the trimmings and Kate made some superb cakes for dessert. We played trivial pursuit after that and then we have just driven home to Glebe. Off to bed now before another extended family and friends day back in Willoughby.

Friday 25 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Six

Christmas Day 2009

After getting to bed at about 1am we woke up about 8am. Randomly was awoken several times through the night, at about 3am by the bin men emptying bins outside, very random time to do it, a mozzie buzzing around the room, waking up hot and then the dog trying to get in the room at about 7am!

We had some brekkie and then opened some presents, not everything yet as we'll save some for when Chris and Hannah are here tomorrow.
We then had a lovely roast chicken lunch, preceded by the seafood I bought at the fish market yesterday. We had mince pies and ice cream to finish. In the afternoon we went over to Tim and Anitas house (Kates cousin) where Fiona (another Kate cousin) is staying while they are in Europe for Christmas. Was lovely to meet more of the Colhoun clan.

We came home having dropped Bill off to work and had two excellent Skype calls, firstly to hazel and Peter and then mum and dad. We exchanged presents across the internet on the video call. We both got some great stuff.

Its raining heavily here in Sydney now.

We watched a bit of TV and it's off to bed.
It's tough having Christmas apart form family but I know we'll regularly have Christmases in the UK, I think you need that cold and dark nights to make it really Christmasy, but the first Christmas down under has been very nice indeed.

Thursday 24 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Five

Christmas Eve

I was up early, I made my way to the fish market and was there by 7.40am. Seems half of Sydney had the same idea, everywhere was three deep with people. I guess people want it as fresh as possible for Christmas so was to be expected. Managed to get a load of cooked King Prawns and smoked salmon to see us through Christmas and Boxing Day.

I was back home before Kate had left for work. Kate went and I chilled out at home. I did check the progress of the bird stuck in the tree above our house. Alas it was still stuck in a load of plastic which was caught in a branch. Yesterday I had phoned WIRES (the wildlife rescue service for native wildlife), they had stated they were uninsured to climb ladders and advised calling fire brigade. This I thought was overkill at time but as time had gone on it seemed the only way to get a solution. A quick call to Glebe Fire Station and 15 minutes later I had the use of a full crew of firemen and their appliance. After some discussion they decided to go over the back of the house and up onto roof, using ladders and ropes. They finally caught the little fella, turns out it was a Rainbow Lorikeet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Lorikeet

and brought him/her down branch, plastic and all.
The fire folks left and phoned WIRES again hoping they would collect it and untangle it and fix it up. They had no one to help and suggested local vet. As such we took it there and dropped it off, WIRES will pick up costs, collect it later and release it back near our house. It seems these little fellas pair up and his/her mate was sitting in the tree swacking at at our injured fella so hopefully they will be reunited. Kate is calling me a proper Aussie now for looking after wildlife., I just could sleep over Christmas knowing poor thing was swinging trapped in the tree.

Up on the roof

Bringing it down

Trying to untangle it...

After all that excitement we packed up for Crimbo in readiness for Bill and Carols.
We then went to Andrew Milnes for a Christmas drinkie before coming over for a nice spag bol in Willoughby

As I write this everyone is downstairs watching 'Father of the Bride', very funny and we are laughing at our wedding ideas too.

An interesting review of the Aussie Year the blighty readers might find interesting

Happy Christmas Eve to my readers...

Wednesday 23 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Four

Wednesday

Kate was at work again today and I hung out around the house again. Not a great deal to report, just more Christmas prep. Had a good Skype call with folks.

Oh and we have a Rainbow Loorikeet stuck in the tree above our house, if it's still there tomorrow I'll have to do something.

Day One Hundred and Ninety Three

A day at home wrapping presents etc. Kate was at work. I wondered up to Glebe to get some lunch and then back to the house. We had dinner at home and then just did the whole telly thing in evening.

Sorry short update and late update too!

Monday 21 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety Two

A busy day, up at 7am to get ready to go out as Kate was going to work and I had to drive her there. We were out of house by 8.30 am. I dropped Kate off and then went and met Bill. We then went to one of his friends houses (a celebrity house don't you know) and I met John who gave me CV advise and may send me some contacts. It was a really useful chat.

I dropped Bill home and then went final Christmas shopping at the Chase, got petrol, drove home, had some lunch, did some washing, washed up, tidied up, watched a bit of telly. Then drove to Newtown to drop off some stuff to Carolines. Then drove to Broadway and tried to buy Bill and Carol some Christmas lights for their house, everywhere was sold out.

Came home, took down one set of our lights to give to them, did a few more things then drove over and picked up Kate from work and we went straight to Willoughby and met Chris and Hannah who had arrived form Adelaide.

We had A BBQ in evening when Carol got home, chilled out and then we have just driven home.

I did a ton of other stuff too I think which Ive forgotten...

Sunday 20 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Ninety One

Happy Birthday to my mother, hope you a have a superb day!

We got up and didn't do much during morning. We then took tram and train to Circular Quay to meet the Caroline and the Boys for Christmas lunch at Wildfire at the passenger terminal.

We did a secret Santa and I got a whole load of Aussie stuff which was cool. The Michael's also bought us a set of hand made lights as an engagement present which was really nice.

http://www.wildfiresydney.com/cuisine_lunch.html

We spent all afternoon in restaurant and after that went to the Glenmore Hotel for a couple more drinks. This was the place we stopped at with folks for a coke when we walked the the Pylon lookout when they were over.

http://www.glenmorerooftophotel.com.au/1_home/

We came home and had a good Skype call with folks and watched a bit of telly afterwards.

Day One Hundred and Ninety

Saturday

A day doing Christmas stuff. Kate went and met her folks across the bridge and spent all day Christmas shopping. I took the tram to Pyrmont Bay and walked across Darling Harbour and went shopping in town.

We met back in Glebe later in afternoon and then at about 6.30 were picked up by Bill and Carol and went to one of their closest friends for Dinner. Maureen and family were very welcoming with a lovely house and superb food. That was over in Bondi area.

We had good healthy debate on the Royal family which was fun.

We came home and grabbed some Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz's

Friday 18 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Nine

Friday

Not much to report today, we got up late and went shopping at Bondi Junction, massive shopping centre and mental on last Friday before Christmas.

Came home, had a Christmas card form John H and Pat Linn, made some dinner and did not much else.

Tomorrow more shopping for Christmas...

It's also rained all day, but hey at least it's not snowing like it is back in blighty.

Thursday 17 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Eight

Hot day today in Sydney. (About 34)

Kate went for her second interview today at the PCFA, I drove her over there and afterwards we went shopping for Christmas.

We then came over to Bill and Carols for dinner and decided to stay over here tonight.

Had a good chat top Chris and Hannah too and look forward to the next couple of weeks when they are back in Sydney. Seems party season is starting, we are out Sat night, Sun Lunch, and then things happening all the way up to Christmas.

It still doesn't feel like Crimbo, with it being so hot and nice weather it just doesn't really compute to this English Boy...

Oh and Bill has kindly set me up with a meeting with one of his friends on Monday to help me possibly get some event contacts/leads which should be good.

Oh and for prosperity here is pics folks sent me form UK of the weather they have returned to and now endure...

More Brrrrrrrrr

Wednesday 16 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Seven

Wed were awoken by the folks calling to say they were home safe and sound. Apparently it's 1 degree C at home, not much fun. Over 30 here in Sydney today.

Kate went off to work and I did 4 loads of washing, oh the joys of unemployment. After lunch I went to visit the Oxfam team in Sydney, there could be some possibility of work in near future so we'll see how that plays out in the new year.

Came home and Kate got back just after me. We had some dinner and then spoke to folks on phone again.

Oh and folks texted to say its snowing in Blighty...queue the stories of Britain coming to a grinding halt again.

Tuesday 15 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Six

Had a good nights sleep which was good.

Got up and we did some chores and then went over to Chatswood and did some more Christmas shopping. Had a few texts form the folks who got on the second leg of their flight form Singapore after stopover.

This evening a quiet night at home.

Monday 14 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Five

Monday

The last day the folks are here in Australia. It has been wonderful having them here, we have done so many good things together in the last 5 weeks. We've been to Melbourne, driven the great ocean road, taken them to look at wedding venues, shown them our lives here down under etc etc.

It's been good showing them places we talk about and I write about here and I think it gives them a good insight into our lives here.

We got up and helped them pack and get sorted, we then took them to the fish market for lunch, that was good although weather hasn't been so good today.

We came back to Glebe, did a few bits and pieces and then headed to the airport. After they had checked in and we had a cuppa it was time for them to go. We tried to make it quick and easy but these things are always pretty unpleasant. Anyway after lots of tears all round we parted ways and they went through to departures.

We'll both miss them and the house certainly seems quiet now. We cant wait to see them back here for the wedding.

After the airport we nipped to Broadway and bought a folder from Kikki K to store all our wedding info in, grabbed some food from supermarket and headed home to our quiet house. We've just watched TV this evening and chilled. We also spoke to Carol and then Chris and Hannah on the phone.

Sunday 13 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Four

An early Christmas day...

We were up and about early and walked to the fish markets to get some supplies for our family Christmas Day while folks are here. We bought smoked salmon, Moreton Bay Bugs and prawns for our starters.

We came back and started prepping. We re-organised the kitchen area as you can see form below and used the outside table. It all looked pretty good.

We finished prepping and then Bill and Carol arrived with more food for the mains. We sent the folks out for drinks and got everything finalised.

Kate made a superb Chocolate pavlova which was decked out with cream and fruit.

We all sat down to dinner which was all good. After dinner we exchanged a few presents, the folks gave Bill and carol a picture from Windsor where they spent time together the year before last. There was a bit of emotion at that point.

Bill and Carol left and we cleared up. We decided to nip out later in the evening and rove over to Luna Park which was shut, anyway we walked along the waterfront for a while.

We drove back to Glebe and finished off the evening with tea and scrabble.

Saturday 12 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Three

Saturday

We arrived in Sydney exactly 6 months ago today, I'm not quite sure where the time has gone, in two weeks Christmas will all be over!

We've done a lot in 6 months, found and furnished our house, bought a car, been to Fraser Island and got engaged, been back to England, been backward and forwards to Melbourne, been to Adelaide, had the folks here 5 weeks, done various bits of work and spent quite some time looking for jobs.

Here's to the next 6 months, we'll be sorted for jobs, I get vibe things are turning our way on that front so hopefully in New Year things will be sorted. I'm getting upbeat about it after a few good calls this week.

As for Saturday, we got up early and went to the Botanic Gardens for the Colhoun Christmas Picnic Brunch. it was col, it was mainly Kate's aunts side of the family, Barbara (Bills sister) and her daughters, Yolanda, Belinda and Anita and respective partners and children.

We left there to go and view another wedding venue at 11am and then back to the picnic.

We came home and ate up the leftovers from yesterdays BBQ and in the afternoon all slept and chilled out. We had takeaway fish and chips form up the road for dinner and rounded out the day with the continuation of the Oz v UK Scrabble tournament. Current score is 11 to 8 to the 'Aussies'.

Friday 11 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty Two

Friday...

We got up early and walked Beau around the local park. We then were out Christmas shopping by 10.30. Had a good session and got a lot of stuff.

We then headed back to Glebe and started getting ourselves sorted for the BBQ in the evening. The folks arrived home at about 5pm, showered and we were all set for everyone arriving.

People arrived from 7ish onwards and we had a good BBQ with lots of chat and drink. We finished up at about 1am and went to bed.

Day One Hundred and Eighty One

Thursday

Up and about early so that all the folks could head off to Canberra for 2 days. Bill and Carol got here at about 9.30 am. Before they left we all sat down and discussed wedding finances. Was a good conversation and everyone knows where they stand. it's all coming together.

They all left and headed off to the capital. Kate and I hung around the house and then she wen to an interview in the early afternoon. I did some shopping in the meantime and then we met up and headed to Willoughby to look after the pets for the night.

Had some food and watched DVD's and then had a disrupted nights sleep by dogs and cats causing chaos!

Wednesday 9 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Eighty

oneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hundredddddddddddddd and eightyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Lets have a look at what you could have won.....well Mrs Smith from Walsall, you've one a speedboat to share with your butch darts playing friend....

Anyway I digress into Bullseye comedy that will mean nothing to the Aussie readers.

Kate went to work, the folks got up at 9.30, well after me I may add and took themselves off to the fish market to buy stuff to cook us dinner.

I hung out at home and ended up talking to a recruitment agent I used to talk to in the UK. He tried to lure me away form Symbian a couple of times and almost persuaded me back then. Anyhow he has also made the leap to Australia with his girlfriend and is still in recruitment, we'll have coffee in new year and discuss options.

Looked at few other jobs too.

Kate came home with a huge plate of baklava from Glenwood, very nice it was too.

the folks cooked a lovely pasta dinner, spoke ot Hazel and we then played scrabble for rest of night. Us Aussies are now leading 10 games to 6, much to the dislike of the old man...

Tuesday 8 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Nine

Up and about early, onto the tram and train to Circular Quay. We then boarded a Captain Cook Cruise around the harbour. The one we took ' the coffee cruise' took 2 hours and was really good. It went all round the bays and across middle harbour and back again.

After we docked we went to the fish markets for lunch, we went to the yumcha place upstairs

http://www.sydneyfishmarket.com.au/AttheMarket/OurRetailers/tabid/77/xmmid/591/xmid/42/Default.aspx

We wondered back home, it was really hot incidentally.
In the evening we went to see Mamma Mia at the Lyric Theatre in the casino complex, that was really good too, although it was pretty chilly inside as auditorium was half full but the aircondidn't know that....

Monday 7 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Eight

A day around the house, it was a really hot day today.

Folks went out shopping most of the day and Kate went to work. In the evening we wondered over to darling harbour and had some food in the food court. Folks went over to the Aquarium for a few hours. Kate and I came home as I had a headache.

We had a good call with Chris and Hannah. When folks came back we chilled a bit then grabbed some Zzzzzzzzzzzz's.

Sunday 6 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Seven

Sunday

We went out to the garden centre in North Sydney today and bought some shrubs for our new planters we bought a while back. We bought some more pots and plants too, plus some herbs. Very Good Life...

We had some lunch and then did all the planting, it looks pretty good. After that Alv and I put up the Christmas lights out front. All very festive despite it being sunny and hot.

We went out for dinner at Jordan's at Darling Harbour, a bit rushed but pretty good food.

http://www.jordonsrestaurant.com.au/home.html

Had an ice cream by the harbour, watched some carol singers and then came back Glebe on the tram.

Saturday 5 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Six

Saturday

Up and about early (difficult considering we got in late) and we left the house by 8.45. We spent the day viewing various wedding venues. we met with Bill and carol too so there was a contingent of 6 viewing the places.

We got a good idea of the places and have a fair idea where we may hold it. I wont mention it here yet until we firm up our thoughts and figure out dates etc. Watch this space.

In the afternoon we just came back to Glebe, we had planned to go out to dinner but decided to stay in and just relax as we were all pretty tired.

our lovely Mancunian neighbours held a party which finished at 6am Sunday morning so sleep was somewhat broken throughout the night.

Day One Hundred and Seventy Five

Friday 4th December

During the morning we hung out around the house while the folks sorted themselves out after getting back from NZ.

In the afternoon we took the folks to the Zoo, had lunch there and wondered round until about 4pm. We also looked at it as a possible venue for our wedding.

In the evening we left folks at home and then went to the Beresford Arms for Pru's leaving drinks. A mad pub that looks small from outside but opens right up out the back.

http://www.theberesford.com.au/

There were some sad farewells in the early hours and we stumbled home in a taxi.

Thursday 3 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Four

Got up and hung out at home. Then went and met a recruitment agent in North Sydney, they didn't have anything for me but advised me on CV and good agents to contact. They suggested I go with IT project mgt contracts for now. I guess this is right way to go and put events dream on hold for a bit.

Some CV updating to be done then. Other aspect is Christmas is kicking in and I know form experience recruitment takes a back seat until new year.

Came back to Glebe, picked up Kate and headed to airport to meet the folks who were coming back from NZ. Great to see them again.

We came home, had some dinner, mapped out what we will do with next 11/12 days and then had a skype call with Hazel. Played a game of scrabble and got beaten!

Tomorrow we visit a wedding venue.

For history sakes on the blog, Tiger Woods admitted getting caught with his pants down today...not that that has made Bill very happy...

Wednesday 2 December 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy Three

Wednesday

Can't believe we are in December already. It doesn't feel like the Christmas build up here, I think it's a combination of

a) It's generally sunny and warm everyday, very summer like to me!
b) The Aussies seem to have less build up, there's very few Christmas adverts on telly, there is some decorations in street/shopping centres but it's not in your face like it is in UK.

I think it's better as in UK you are sick of it by Dec 25th, whereas here it will be quite nice when it arrives.

Spent the day at home, looking for jobs, sorting out Itunes and a few other bits and pieces. The folks arrives back here tomorrow which will be cool.

Day One Hundred and Seventy Two

Tuesday

We got up and tidied up. Pru was coming over to go out to lunch so we thought we had better tidy up a bit!

Pru arrived and we headed up to the AB for lunch which was all good. After lunch we came home and chatted with Pru until she went off to meet her sister.

rest of the day was around the house, writing Christmas cards to send to Blighty. Also looked at jobs again hehehe.

Spoke to a recruitment agent in North Sydney who I will go and visit on Thursday

Monday 30 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy One

Day One Hundred and Seventy One - Monday 30th November

A day spent home alone looking for jobs, blitzed job sites, followed up a few leads from friends, reviewed CV, sent to some agencies.

All we can do really is just plough on. It's a bit demotivating as days, weeks and month pass but I'm sure something will come my way soon. same goes for Kate.

Kate was at Vaucluse again today, she arrived home about 6.

Not much else to report today!

Sunday 29 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Seventy

A lazy day around the house and a brief bit of shopping. Bought some Christmas stuff at Broadway, alas the 2m high inflatable Santa for our front balcony was out of stock at the cheapo shop. Our tackiness ambitions will have to wait another year (I'm joking by the way).

Kate cooked a superb pasta dinner (a Donna Hay recipe, those in blighty should check her out, Oz's answer to Delia Smith).

Watched some DVD's.

Tomorrow Kate is at work and I plough on with jobs, agencies etc etc.

Interesting post by Nick today...

Saturday 28 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Nine

Saturday

We both got up late (well 10am which is late for me) and lazed around house with brekkie and papers. After lunch we went over to Chatswood and met Kates folks. We then went over to their house for dinner. Had a good call with Chris and Hannah, seems like a long time since we spoke to them.

Watched Marley and Me movie too, which was not to bad actually, easy entertainment whichdidn't take much brain power. Just driven home at midnight and knocking out the blog.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Eight

Friday

Kate went to work all day and I stayed home looking at jobs. I did venture out briefly to pick up a few things and then back to the house. It was over 30 degrees so didn't hang about outside too long!

Spent some time booking in appoinments at wedding venues too and also spoke to folks in NZ briefly

After Kate got home we went over to Oxford St to meet with Pru, Mike, Ben etc for dinner. We had Vietnamese here

http://www.saigonbay.com.au/

After dinner we hit a number of bars in the area. Oxford St is predominately a gay area and it was funny seeing the drag entertainment in a couple of the bars. We came home about 1am.

Thursday 26 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Seven

Had an invite to the Joneses Christmas bash, first one I'll have missed for a long time but down under for Christmas this year!

We got up and went for a cycle around Blackwattle Bay, we both needed some time out form searching through seek.com.au. It was hot but we chucked an aerobie around for a while as well.

We came back and did some more job hunting, I applied for one and Kate spotted a few she will go for.

It's warming up here in Oz, been sunny most of the week and house is starting to warm up quite a bit, fans are on more and more these days. Shouldn't complain, must be accused of being a whinging Pome.

We went to the Rose in Erskenville this evening for pub trivia night, we didn't win alas.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Six

A day around the house, mainly spent job hunting online, we took it in turns to apply for various roles. It's getting to be a bit of a drag applying for roles, hearing nothing and going for the next thing. I've lost count on how many we've applied for now.

We took some time out and walked to the fish market to get some fruit etc.

Still may have a lead out of one of them lets see. We had a quick bite to eat up the pub in the evening and then vegged in front of TV in evening.

Tuesday 24 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Five

A day spent looking at jobs and hitting the shops. We went to Myer and bought a few bits and pieces. Had a quick Japanese meal at the place up the road. Not a great deal else to report today.

Day One Hundred and Sixty Four

Up early to drive Alvin and Crystal to the airport, dropped them off successfully and headed home. A quiet day around the house looking at jobs etc. Not too much more to report.

Alas back in UK my sisters and her husbands cat Tabs lost her little fight for life and went on to better things.

Sunday 22 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Three

A quiet day, got up late and didnt do much during morning. It's hot here, 40 degrees today. Bill and Carol came over and we bent out some of the metal on car so Bill could drive it home.

In the afternoon we stayed around house trying to stay cool.

This evening we went ot see pearl Jam at the Sydney Football Stadium near the SCG. Was hot but a really good gig. Im impressed with integrated transport like the buses to and from Central station. We were there and back in under half an hour each way. A few pics...

Saturday 21 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Sixty Two

Saturday

A day in Melbourne. We got up and Kate and I went round to a coffee shop for brekkie, it wasn't the best but it did the job.

We checked out and then we all headed over to the Albert Park to see the Formula 1 facilities. Was a bit of a trek around the lake but we got there in the end. Good to see the stuff again and Alv was happy to see it all.

We then headed back the city. We did some shopping and lunch in Melbourne Central and then took a tram to Fed Square and Flinders St station.

A bit more time spent in Melbourne and then we drove back to airport, dropped the hire car and checked in.

A good flight back, a bit bumpy and slightly late getting away. We were met by Bil and Carol at the airport and got home about 10 o'clock.

A nice break to Melbourne all round.

Day One Hundred and Sixty One

We up and away early and drove the remainder of the Great Ocean Road. We stopped at a number of places along the way including the 12 Apostles and London Bridge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Apostles_%28Victoria%29

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Arch

We also tried to visit Cape Otway Lighthouse but it was closed due to the filming of some movie but it was OK because they had knocked 3 dollars of the already 16 dollar price to walk up to the lighthouse as a result. Alas we didn't even get the chance to pay the 50 bucks to climb the lighthouse. A bargain at twice the price, not, needless to say we were not too worried to be saving 54 dollars and not walking to somewhere 100m from the lighthouse.

One bonus of driving out to the lighthouse was the chance encounter the wildlife, as you can see from the pics below we got lucky!

As we ended the GOR, we then drove back to Melbourne, a long drive across the plains, we made good time and got into Melbourne about 6. We stayed in Carlton, near where I worked at Oxfam.

Had a superb Italian meal nearby, again a recommendation from the Stewards Restaurant Blog Australia 2009

Tough Day

12 Apostles

Day One Hundred and Sixty

We got up early in readiness for heading to the airport. We were collected by Bill and off we went to the Airport. Not 100m from leaving the house we were hit by a woman up the road driving out of her drive. We basically crunched in the front of the car. To be fair it's a blind manoeuvre getting out of our drives into the lane behind us but you can edge out slowly so passing cars like us can see you coming, it was just instant and out of nowhere.

At the end of the day no one was hurt which is main thing.

We then had to get to airport as poor Carols car was not drivable. trying to get a taxi at 8am on Bridge Road isn't a goer! We headed for the tram and to central station. We then jumped on a train to the airport.

After that little escapade our travel all went quite smoothly, a simple flight down to Melbourne and then we picked up the hire car no problems.

We then set off for the Great Ocean Road. We had some lunch at a service stop where the woman serving dint understand the concept of service, miserable c#w.

We drove down to Anglesea and Lorne. At Lorne we some snacks and a walk.

We then proceeded to drive to Apollo Bay where we were staying. On route we almost ran a Koala over who decided to cross the road in front of us, unheard of apparently.

We got to our accommodation, it was great, the only 5 star accommodation on the Great Ocean Road, its here

http://www.chocolategannets.com.au/

and I have to say thoroughly recommended if you get a chance.

Kate and I took a walk on beach and then we all went into town to pick up a takeaway of pizzas and fish and chips. A few bevvies and food later it was bed time.

Ouch!

In the evening we headed down to circular quay, met Bill and carol and went to Aria restaurant for dinner. Very nice it was too.

We then went to the Opera House to catch the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform. A superb evening!

Day One Hundred and Fifty Eight

Quick update today

Spent most of day at home job hunting, plus got a call to say I hadn't landed the cool Oxfam job I interviewed for last week. Ah well onwards and upwards.

Dinner at home and then we caught up with folks in town who were meeting one of their friends.

Monday 16 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Seven

Monday

We got up and made our way over to Circular Quay on the tram and train. From there we walked up through the Rocks to the Bridge. we walked along the bridge towards north and went in the Pylon museum/exhibition. The pics are shown below.

We then headed back to Circular Quay and had lunch at Wolfies, a firm favourite of the folks. Had a superb steak.

We made our way back to Glebe, chilled for a short time and then wen to the dogs....literally. Just round the corner form here, less than 10 mins walk is the Wentworth Park greyhound stadium, we had a night of gambling and didn't really win much between us all.

Now home and off to bed..

Brixton Academy, I mean some other concert venue...

Up the Bridge

Gone to the dogs...

Day One Hundred and Fifty Six

Sunday

We got up early and headed over to Bondi and Bronte to see the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. There's a few pics below. It was really good but really busy. we were joined by Bill and Carol.

We walked from the direction of Bronte to Bondi and saw most stuff along the way, it was realy busy though, to be expected as it was the last day of it.

We stopped short of Bondi and got lucky by seeing the migrating whales heading back south jumping out of the sea just off shore.

We came home and then went to AB for dinner. We had a good Skype call with Hazel, weird to have folks this end looking back to UK on Skype.

Got a bit sunburnt too!

Not a bad day...

Giddy Up...

Balls to it...

Diamonds are a girls best friend apparently...

What time is it...

Saturday 14 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Five

An easy day today, folks got up and headed into town on their own, we chilled around the house. Grabbed some lunch and waited for folks to get back.

In the evening we went over to Bill and carols for a lovely dinner. We had champagne to celebrate our engagement again and then had a superb roast lamb dinner. We also spoke briefly to Chris and Hannah.

We made our way home, off to bed now, we decided to have an early start to Bronte/Bondi to catch sculptures by the sea exhibition.

Friday 13 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Four

We got up and took the folks shopping around Broadway for some bits and pieces, bought some stuff for lunch and BBQ in evening and came home and relaxed. After lunch we drove down to the Opera House and Circular Quay. Was nice to finally get to tourist ville since being here!

Had an ice cream and watched the ferries come and go. Came home and had a BBQ, all went well I think. After dinner we left the folks at home and went to Newtown to see Pru who was arriving from Hong Kong for 3 weeks back home in Oz.

Was good to catch up with everyone.
Grabbed a taxi home and was in bed by 12.30.

Thursday 12 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Three

The tacky sign I made...

Up and away early to the airport to collect the folks. We waited quite some time, there seemed to be many flights coming through at once.

We did see a couple of camera crews following one of the Aussie cricket team through the arrivals hall. About 5 mins later Leyton Hewett and Bec Cartwright his wife passed through too.

The folks then came through, was great to see them in Sydney, it will give us a chance to show them all the stuff we have talked about over the last 150 days or so.

We drove them back to Glebe and had a cuppa and a good catch up.

Once they had freshened up we took a walk to the fish markets for lunch, that was cool and Alvin was very interested in the activities there.

After lunch we walked to Darling Harbour and bought crystal a hat to avoid the sun.

We took them on the tram home so they knew how that works so they can get about without us if needs be.

An afternoon of scrabble and tea trying to keep them awake so they can nail the jet lag. A biggish thunderstorm just before dinner put paid to sitting in the garden We had dinner and folks finally crashed at about 8.30.

Tomorrow we'll take them shopping and then probably go to circular Quay or something (I've not even been there yet since emigrating to Sydney!).

Wednesday 11 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty Two

A busy day, we got up in Willoughby and loaded up the Ute with beds and sofa. We then drove to Barbaras (kate's Aunt) to drop off bed and pick up old one. We then came to Glebe and dropped of the sofa we have taken from Bill and Carols. Once that was all unloaded Bill made his way home.

I then had an interview for a job with Oxfam. I think it went quite well, I should find out next week. The role ties in a great deal with my experience.

Came home and we then proceeded to blitz the house in preparation for the arrival of the folks first thing tomorrow. We have just finished and it's about 11.30! Off to bed and up early to get to airport for 7am...

Tuesday 10 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty One

Our new garden furniture was delivered this morning, it looks really good in the garden, and gives us more space to eat etc. Will also make life easier when the folks arrive on Thursday.

We then had some lunch at Broadway and did some shopping for stuff for folks.

We had to got o the RTA, an experience I relish every time, so Kate could update her license, I tried to do mine but apparently you have to be in the country 6 months continually before they give you a NSW driving licence, so I'll be back there in April...more fun!

We bought some more stuff for Garden in Chatswood and then we are staying at Bill and Carols tonight. We are collecting their old sofa first thing in morning and taking it to ours, so makes sense to be here rather than fighting through traffic across bridge early doors.

Had a lovely chicken satay meal here, and off to bed soon. Heard form folks who have arrived OK in Singapore.

Monday 9 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Fifty

Broadway and We went out an did more shopping for the imminent arrival of the folks on Thursday, went toBunnings out of town.

The weather is really picking up so we just chilled out for rest of day. We were both looking at jobs on web at the same time!

Spoke to folks late in evening to check they were all ready for their departure to Singapore, that was all good.

Not much else to report...

Sunday 8 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Nine

Up early for a Sunday. 7.30 and Foxtel man was here not long after 8am. After a few technical problems the fioxtel was installed. Woohoo lots more TV channels!

We then went of r a brisk walk around local park, trying to kick start our health kick again!

Hung out around the house and then went o Bill and Carols for dinner.

Saturday 7 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Eight

I got up early and went out to collect our BBQ from the shop. Came home and put it together. Bill and carol picked us up and we headed into town. They kindly bought us an engagement present in Myer and then we grabbed some lunch in the QVB.

We came back and all watched the races from Flemington with a cuppa. Bill and Carol went and we chilled out. We went out in car and looked at plants for garden and ended up buying one Fuchsia. I seem to recall they were a favourite of my grandad or Crystal likes em, anyway we have on plant at least.

We came home, had our first BBQ then had a Skype call to home. Just chilling now. Foxtel man could be here from 8am onwards tomorrow so will be hitting the sack soon.

Friday 6 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Seven

Friday

Got up and went shopping at Bunnings, needed a few bits for the house prior tot he folks arrival. Got home and we walked over to city to look at some garden furniture. We had a quick lunch in Fish markets on way over.

We bought some new towels in Myers too. Good to finally have our own and we can return our borrowed stuff to Bill and Carol too!

Came home and then nipped to Broadway for some dinner stuff. We cooked Risotto together and watched some spooks.

Didn't feel like a Friday, seem all out of whack with days at the moment, still it's the weekend now!

Our foxtel is installed tomorrow too, at last some half decent telly choice!

Thursday 5 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Six

A week until the folks land on Aussie soil! Time seems to be flying, we left UK 4 weeks ago today!

A day around the house mainly, weather has been crap, we both did some job hunting today, looked at a few but I didn't apply for any I saw.

We came over to Willoughby and had a Thai takeaway, did a Skype call with Hazel and watched some telly. Not really a huge amount to write home about today!

Wednesday 4 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Five

A really hot night so it took a while to get to sleep, it didn't really cool down much.

We went for lunch in the rocks with Kate's dad Bill and his sisters Marion and Barbara. Barbara gave us a lovely engagement present of a painting she had done.We had lunch nearby and then left to do some shopping.

I must be becoming an Aussie, I bought myself the obligatory BBQ today. Its very similar to this

http://www.barbequesgalore.com.au/products/product-view.aspx?id=486

Came home, did a load of food shopping, had dinner at home and chilled

Tuesday 3 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Four

Melbourne Cup Day...

Got up early, body clock is still on working time. Did a few mails and stuff during morning. Then Michael came over and we all walked to Darling Harbour to watch the Melbourne Cup Race. Had a few bets on but wont nothing on that race. Should say we had yum cha at the Chinese restaurant at the fish markets on way over which was good.

a bookies within the pub, you can put bets We wondered back towards home and stopped at another pub, its great here the TAB is effectivelyon there and then. Won 65 bucks on another race so probably came out about even.

Wondered home, chilled out and had a skype call with Alv and Crystal...

Monday 2 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Three

Last day In Melbourne. We got up and had some brekkie in the hotel. After checking out we went our separate ways, Kate went to meet her friend Libby for lunch, whilst I went back to the office to wrap up a few last things and take the minibus back to the hire company.

We met each other again and did some shopping around Melbourne and then headed up tot he airport. Had an easy flight back, the plan was less than a third full. Everyone is heading to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. It's much like Grand National, although its a national holiday in Victoria for it, it's all people have been talking abut all week. People here in NSW are talking about it and taking time off too.

We got back to airport and were met by Carol, a quick trip to Willoughby and then home to Glebe for sleep!

Sunday 1 November 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty Two

Sunday

Last day of event. Out of bed at 6.10am...Outside hotel at 6.30 putting kids on bus to station. 8am taking bottles of beer of kids and sending them to have a shower and breakfast. 10am calling rooms, getting keys from hotel management to wake up kids who had drunk a bottle of tequila each until 6am.

12 o clock last kid on bus.

Happy happy event days!

Kate and I wondered round the queen vic markets, then went to Aquarium ( I think Dubai shopping centres have ruined us for aquariums).

Back to hotel for a bit

We then went out for dinner with Pip, who we used to work with at Symbian 2 years ago. Was great to see her and catch up.

We are back at hotel and off to bed.

Day One Hundred and Forty One

Saturday

Back in the office early doors at 8am to print up a few things, then planned to spend day on event at some of the activities. Instead ended up in office laminating pictures and certificates. Thankfully Kate was with me having arrived at lunchtime.

In the evening we went to Middletons office on the 25th floor of the Rialto Tower. Was amazing night with the participants doing performances etc. We got back to hotel at about 10.15. We tried to get some dinner but ended up only being able to get a crepe round the corner. Hit bed about 11.

Friday 30 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Forty

Friday at last!
Event fatigue is setting in across all of team, we are counting down the hours until the end.

We had bus problems earlier in the week, now after a bit of a roasting form me and a few shirty emails they delivered well ahead of time today. Today's highlight was taking the participants to play Football at Melbourne Olympic Park.

Was a good afternoon, did feel like a teacher counting folks on and off of bus!

Here is a couple of pics of participants, you couldn't ask for a more polite, great bunch of kids. I think there will be much emotion on Saturday/Sunday when we have to send them all home to different parts of country.

Day One Hundred and Thirty Nine

Thursday...

Quit a few issues throughout the day but dealt with without too much problem. Finished up around 5pm and wondered in to town thinking it was late night shopping. apparently not, that's Friday it seems.

Anyway Myer came through and I managed to buy some trainers, new polo shirt and shorts, weather in Melbourne has really warmed up.

Wondered home and crashed out.

Wednesday 28 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Eight

As I write this I'm looking after the after hours chill out room at the office, a place where the participants can go and chill. We've had Chinese takeaway and they are currently working their way through YouTube it seems on the big screen.

Today was good, event has reached its calm phase, where everything is ticking over. Kids got away early at 4.30 today which is good as they all seem knackered.

trying to keep in touch with everyone but its a bit manic.

Modified Kate's flights so she can get here earlier on Sat, that wont come soon enough for me!

Day One Hundred and Thirty Seven

Tuesday

A few more problems with event today, mess up's like bus being booked for 27th Nov instead of 27th Oct. But we managed it, participants seem to be getting along all OK.

Had a late night as I had to swap rooms so person on call could be in my room which is nominated room for staff member on call. It's a bit of a drag up rooting but not too bad. Did a load of washing in hotel laundry, oh the exciting life of events!

Sorry for short posts at moment....again events...

Tuesday 27 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Six

Monday 26th Oct

Day one of event proper, all got off to a good start, had to go to airport again, picking up the late arrivals, mainly from Sydney. Funny to see the different attitude the Sydney participants had to others from around the country. Guess they just have the city in them.

Day went off OK, few hiccups here and there but no major drama.

the end of the evening was at the Cinema with participants to see Richard Franklins Stone Bros movie, I didn't hang around long and went home, had room service and went to bed.

Sunday 25 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Five

Rewritten now...

A long day spent mainly looking at baggage carousels at Melbourne Domestic Airport waiting for participants to arrive. I had a number of volunteers with me helping me transfer people to the bus to town.

Its amazing how the minicab drivers all wear the same suits, have car keys in one hand and phone in other and all stink of dodgy aftershave.

It's also amazing how many people ask you if you are there to pick them up despite holding a sign clearly saying oxfam!

Finished at airport about 9.30 and came back to Hotel and crashed.

Saturday 24 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Four

Saturday

Up and into office, met the others and we went out and about round Melbourne picking up stuff for event. Nice not to be at desk for a while!

Finished up around 5.30 and headed into town assuming shops would be open, apparently everything closes at 6pm in this town, wanted to but some trainers but ah well. Managed to trash my new boots getting in and out of minibus, pesky hire company has put that wheel blacking stuff all over tyres which is now all over my boots. Might need a new delivery via the Alv/Crystal express which rocks into town in a couple of weeks.

Went home, spoke to folks which was good, also spoke to Kate and her folks, again all good.

Watched crap telly and went to bed about 10...

Friday 23 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Three

Into the office by 8am for a busy busy day of getting last minute details sorted for the event. In the afternoon we collected our minibus and once I was all done at office I drove back to Northcote. Managed to avoid any hook right turns (a Melbourne quirk where if you are turning right on a box junction you pull over to the left to allow straight on traffic/trams through the junction, then when light turns red you do the right turn)

Had a quick dinner at home, watched some da Vinci code movie then headed out at 10.20to airport to pick up first arrivals. managed to get lost on way to picking up other oxfam staff person but eventually made it in tie to pick up 3 participants who had travelled all day from Western Australia.

The event...

Oxfam hosts youth gathering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

Oxfam Australia is hosting a gathering for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in Melbourne next week to help develop and inspire the next generation of community leaders, advocates and decision makers.

Proudly supported by Middletons, CHANGECOURSE runs from 26-31 October 2009 and will host 50 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged between 18 and 25 years old for five days of networking, learning and self discovery. Participants have been drawn from all States and Territories and from major cities as well as remote communities.

Jirra Lulla Harvey, Youth Coordinator with Oxfam Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s program said the group represents the diversity of Indigenous communities across the nation with each participant bringing with them unique perspectives, knowledge and experiences.

“With 60 per cent of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders population under 25 years of age, young leaders play a vital role in creating a future of Indigenous self determination,” said Harvey.

“CHANGECOURSE will be a time for participants to examine the impact they can play in the future of their communities.”

CHANGECOURSE participants include Merindah Donnelly from Redfern, NSW, who is originally from the rural town of Tingah. “Growing up in an Aboriginal community instilled me with a passion for social justice from a young age,” said Donnelly.

“Learning about Indigenous issues from a human rights based approach helps me to articulate the things I have always felt.

“I would also like to see the youth in my community engage in education and employment opportunities, while at the same time maintaining Aboriginal ways of knowing. It’s a duality. Because while we live in a modern society, it is our right to uphold our unique cultural beliefs.”

At CHANGECOURSE, participants will attend sessions run by Emily Howie, a Senior Lawyer from the Human Rights Law Resource Centre Ltd and Margaret Raven, from the Indigenous Human Rights Network of Australia.

Other highlights include a chance to experience a tasting workshop by chefs from gourmet Indigenous caterers Black Olive, try circus skills at the National Institute of Circus Arts and a friendly match of AFL football led by Leon Egan, Indigenous Kickstart Manager at the AFL and Barry Firebrace and Ralph White from the Indigenous Unit at Sport & Recreation Victoria.

Thursday 22 October 2009

Day One Hundred and Thirty Two

Arrived office 7.45am.....left office 8.15pm Monster Day!

One of the key team on event has gone down with flu (was suspected swine for for a short time but thankfully not). This has meant much more running around and things I had assumed were all sorted (like booking of venues 3 days before the event) are perhaps not as secure as I thought. Lesson learnt, check and recheck and don't assume...my new motto.

As a result I'll be at airport at midnight Friday night picking up first arrivals.

Long day as I say, wondered home, got in at 9pm, watched half hour of telly and went to bed. Glad I'm being paid an hourly rate!

Oh and got this press release, this will get very interesting purely from an outsiders view...

NOKIA PRESS RELEASE October 22, 2009

Nokia sues Apple in Delaware District Court for infringement of Nokia GSM, UMTS and WLAN patents

Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced that it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple's iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards. As a leading innovator in wireless communications, Nokia has created one of the strongest and broadest patent portfolios in the industry, investing more than EUR 40 billion in R&D during the last two decades. Much of this intellectual property, including the patents in suit, has been declared essential to industry standards. Nokia has already successfully entered into license agreements including these patents with approximately 40 companies, including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors, allowing the industry to benefit from Nokia's innovation. The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards.

The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007. "The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia. "Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation." During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 10,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of GSM technologies and its evolution to UMTS / 3G WCDMA as well as wireless LAN, which is also demonstrated by Nokia's strong patent position in these technologies.
