Day Two Hundred and Thirty Three

Sunday

A quiet day around the house, we did a bit of shopping and generally had a lazy day. I washed the car and we had dinner. We watched the final of the Australian Open tennis which Andy Murray failed to win but he put in a good effort.

Had a Skype call with folks.

And happy birthday to one of my readers Karo!

Saturday 30 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Thirty Two

We got up and drove to the Paddington markets. It was nice to see arts and crafts on sale. Grabbed a quick drink in local pub before heading back to Glebe for lunch. We then drove to Chatswood, looking at presents for various upcoming things and had success.

http://www.paddingtonmarkets.com.au/results.aspx?i=716

We then went to Willougby for dinner, had a superb barbecue and spent evening playing a game called compatibility followed by Trivial Pursuit. Kate and I won the Compatibility but lost the TP.

We made the mistake of thinking we had a Skype call with Alv and Crystal tonight, so Alv we can do it at original time of 9.30GMT Sunday as planned.

Just driven home and off to bed

Friday 29 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Thirty One

Up and out to work, easy day there.

Came home and waited for Kate and when she got home we went straight back out and met Marianne at The Helm Bar in Darling Harbour. Had a few drinks and then went for dinner at Chinta Ria which was nice.

http://www.chintaria.com/

It was good to catch up on all the news from London, we'll probably see here again before she heads back towards late February.

Still muggy here.

Thursday 28 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Thirty

Another day at work, not much to report from there.

Had a call from Oxfam this evening asking me what I'm up to these days, I think there could be possible opportunities there down the line.

Cooked a Jamie Oliver Risotto this evening, have to say it was pukka...

Spoke to Adelaide gang on phone.

Just watched the tennis, Andy Murray goes through to the final on Sunday...should be a great match to watch, we might even get a Brit winning it...

Really muggy here today, was a storm this evening but it hasn't cleared the air much.

Roll on Friday, tomorrow we catch up with Sully from Symbian who is back in town..

Wednesday 27 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Nine

Another day at work, not really much to report, weird being back in meetings in an office.

Picked up Kate after work at Central and we went shopping.

Tonight we've chilled out at home.

Tuesday 26 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Eight

A quiet day at home, we got up late having gone to bed late!

Australia day today, my first one here. Was great to see all the Aussies wondering round with Aussie flag clothing on etc. We failed to catch any of the events around the harbour such as ferry racing etc, we just wanted to chill out at home.

We had lunch and dinner etc, did a load of washing and watched a lot of the Australian Open tennis, just seen Andy Murray go through to the semi's, should be another good match.

Had a cool chat to folks on Skype.

Back to work tomorrow.

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Seven

Ah Monday mornings, what fun....

Drove to work and had a fairly easy day doing nothing too strenuous at Caritas. Came home just after 5 and waited for Kate to get home.

We got ready and then headed over to Michael's 30th Birthday celebrations at The Supper Club on Oxford St. Was a really good night and was certainly very busy. We left there at about 2.30am and grabbed a taxi home. Got to bed at about 3am.

Tomorrow is Australia Day so a national day off.

Sunday 24 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Six

Sunday

A late start after just chilling out for a lazy Sunday morning. We then went over to Willoughby for Sunday lunch which was nice. We hung out there most of afternoon before heading home via Woolies at Northbridge for a big food shop.

In the evening we had a light dinner, watched a bit of the Australian Open on the tele and off to bed in order to have that joyous Monday morning back to work tomorrow.

Saturday 23 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Five

The Big Day Out 2010

Today we went to the Big Day Out at the Sydney Showground. It was super hot on the train there and hot when we arrived. after an hour or though the breeze picked up and the cool change arrived. It would have been unbearable otherwise.

We caught some of Eskimo Joe and Kasabian. We checked out the silent disco for a while before meeting Mike and the others. We took them back to the silent disco and then met Caroline.

We saw Lily Allen (second time in 2 days) and then grabbed some food. In the evening we saw Powderfinger and Muse before battling home on the train and tram.

Not a bad festival, didn't feel like the festie 's I'm used to and I'm not a fan of the two stage set up.

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Four

Friday

Back to work...

Started at CARITAS today, a short term role supporting some of their events and back filling for someone who is moving into more of the event side of things.

It's good easy money which will be handy. Spent most of morning being inducted into the CARITAS way.

Finished up at 5 and met Kate at Central on her way home and we took tram home together.

Had dinner up the pub and then had a good Skype call with folks.

Looks like me might have finally rented flat in Colliers Wood after 3 false starts. Watch this space until its sign sealed and delivered.

Thursday 21 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Three

A manic day...

Got up and after breakfast drove to Alexandria and had a brief meeting with CARITAS. I start there tomorrow doing some project administration work. It's a temp role and actually ideal as we are clear on both sides its 4-6 weeks for them and from my side if I get a proper job I can walk out of the door. Gets some money coming in.

Drove back to Glebe again.

Cancer Council Chilled briefly, I then drove to Wooloomaloo in the east and interviewed for a job with theNSW. This was an interesting role and I think the interview went well. I'll find out in a few weeks.

Drove back to Glebe again.

Then drove to Willoughby to see Bill briefly (to drop of some ironing to be honest, lucked out with a future father in law who loves to iron). Drove from there to St.Leonards to pick up Kate.

Drove back to Glebe again

We had some dinner then we drove over to the Horden Pavillion to see Lily Allen. Have to say was a really good gig and a pretty good venue too.

Took us best part of an hour to get out of the multistory car park though and we drove Caroline who we met there back to Newtown

Drove back to Glebe again

Just got home, trying to sort out rental issues with the flat in London and now off to bed before up early to go to work.

Wednesday 20 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty Two

Sad news, overnight the excellent cafe in Glebe we ate in on just Sunday, burnt to the ground

http://www.smh.com.au/national/popular-cafe-totally-destroyed-by-fire-20100120-mjg2.html

Got up as Kate went to work and jumped on the bike and cycled round the par, across the Anzac bridge and back past the fish markets. Took me about half an hour. Will try and get another one of these trips in this week and start to build them up.

Came home and showered and started on job search again. Starting to get some fruition tot he previous efforts.

Tomorrow I'm going to see CARITAS about some work. It's not directly event work yet, more back filling for someone who is now running an event (who it sounds like is less experienced than me) so more admin at this stage but it is work and its casual so gives flexibility, will bring some money in and could lead to a proper event role. I could be in work by Friday...

In the afternoon tomorrow I also have a job interview at The Cancer Council of New South Wales, this role is event co-ordinating their Relay for Life events in NSW, although might only be par time.

In addition this afternoon I talked with a recruitment agent about another job I applied for, she wanted a slightly revised CV which I sent through so more may come of that tomorrow. That's another interesting looking role.

Watch this space.

Picked Kate up from work and we came over to Willoughby for dinner with Carol. We usually do this on a Thursday but tomorrow night we are going to see Lily Allen in town.

Day Two Hundred and Twenty One

A day at home after running Kate over to work in the car. Applied for one job today, had a phone call later in the afternoon about some possible short term work which I'll mull over tonight and follow up tomorrow.

Chucked a chook on the bbq this evening.

Another sunny day!

Monday 18 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Twenty

Monday

We had a crap nights sleep, a bloody mozzie caused havoc in our room and I couldn't find it to squat it. there's nothing worse than the high pitched whine of mozzie wings by your ear. Kate alas was bitten a few times.

We were up and about early, Kate started work today, she got away just before 8am. Back to reality, I just need to land a job now too.

I spent the day looking for jobs and making a mega spag bol for dinner. Had a good Skype call with folks after dinner.

Weather is all good here, beautiful blue skies all day.

Sunday 17 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Nineteen

Sunday

A lazy morning and then we went shopping, we grabbed some lunch in Cafe Otto on Glebe Point Road. We cooked dinner in the evening and generally chilled out.

Kate starts work tomorrow so it feels like a proper Sunday.

Saturday 16 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Eighteen

A quiet day around the house, Kate went out shopping with her mum on the North shore side of town. I did a few bits and pieces around the house.

Had a small meltdown when the landlord called in the morning, today was last day he could give us notice to move out before we roll onto a rolling contract, thankfully he only wants access to put insulation in the loft, but also the same a bit un-nerving!

Spoke to H & P on Skype in evening and watched run fat boy run on tele.

Friday 15 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seventeen

Busy day today, up and about checking the job sites, Fridays seem slower than other days for new jobs. We went into the city to take back a couple of presents/shoes which were not needed or needed changing etc. Had a light lunch in town.

Came home and did some more job stuff, I then washed the car.

We decided to go out for dinner at the pub and went here

http://www.australianyouthhotel.com.au/index.cfm

Ate far too much in the restaurant part as opposed to pub section where food looked lighter.

Came home and had a nice Skype call with folks.

Day Two Hundred and Sixteen

Thursday

A day around the house apart from a brief trip to Broadway to get phone credit. Applied for a number of jobs during the day. We went to Willoughby for dinner which was nice. Came home and went to bed.

Wednesday 13 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Fifteen

Just finished reading Chris Evans biography, very entertaining.

We spent time at home in the morning, looking for jobs etc. We had planned to have a break and hit the beach bit weather seemed to go off, so we opted to go for a short drive and walk instead. We headed over to 'The gap' basically the South side of the harbour entry here...

The Gap link!

We then hung out on Watsons Bay, the home to the famous Doyles, we took a short stroll up and down the beach.

We cam home and had a BBQ with salad and have been chilling this evening. Been a big thunderstorm too.

Day Two Hundred and Fourteen

A day at home

I spent much of the day looking for jobs, I signed up with an agent, applied directly for two jobs and prepped for another application. Kate went out and did a big shop for supplies.

It was pretty warm and muggy here in Sydney today.

we had a nice dinner and relaxed in the evening.

Monday 11 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Thirteen

Monday in Adelaide

dress shop in 43 degree heat and the hottest winds Ive ever felt to pick up We got up and saw Hannah go off to work. We slept through Chris's early departure! At lunchtime we took a taxi to the Tap Inn for lunch. We then walked for about 10 minutes to theKate's Bridesmaid dress. That was all good and we got a taxi back to Chris and Hannah's.

Spent an hour or so chilling out and then packing up to leave. We grabbed a taxi to airport and took our flight back to the cooler Sydney. The pilot did seem to bottom out the suspension on landing too, a few people even screamed!

Carol kindly picked us up and drove us home, we had a cuppa and then we did a Skype call back to chilly Blighty. We then hit the Zzzzzzzzzz's

Sunday 10 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Tweleve

Sunday...hot hot....

We got up and chilled out around the house in Adelaide. We then decided to go to the zoo to see the Pandas.

It was OK trip but very hot and it left me with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth, I'm all for animal conservation but I thought the conditions the pandas were being kept in were quite small and more importantly it seemed like a money making exercise, ship the punters through without much thought to welfare of animals. This was made even more concrete to me when they were pitching ' Breakfast with the pandas' at 120 dollars a pop.

The state the sea lions were kept in was appalling too, a pool no more than 4 feet deep and no bigger than 15 meters by about 8 wasn't really fair.

We came home and had a nice dinner in the evening with some time in the spa...

Day Two Hundred and Eleven

Quick update

Got up late and found it was 35 outside already at 10.15am. We went to Tap Inn for lunch, had Tapas, played golf on the indoor driving range, I then beat Kate and Chris at pool - 7 balled them. We then picked up the other Kate (Hannah's other Bridesmaid) and went shoe shopping. Well Chris and I left the Kate's to it and looked at electronics instead.

We all met back up and then went home. Hit the spa as it was 41 degrees and then had dinner at home. Watched a movie tonight and now off to bed.

Still 30.8 degrees outside at midnight.

Friday 8 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Ten

30 Weeks in Australia

Well here we are in Adelaide, its hot! It topped out at 41 degrees today and is expected to be up to 43 over the weekend.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/01/08/2788544.htm

As a result we hung out around the house all day, well kate and Hannah went to the dress shop for a fitting.

We had a nice dinner at home cooked by Chris and Hannah. Tonight we are chilling inthe aricon.

Despite being hot it seems better than home...

Day Two Hundred and Nine

Thursday

We got up early and went into town shopping. Kate was looking for shoes for Chris and Hannah's wedding and we found a pair in Myer. we then wen to DJs to spend our Christmas vouchers from Bill and Carol. I bought some clothes. After that we came home, had some lunch and packed for Adelaide.

Bill and Carol picked us up and ran us over to the airport and we got flight with no probs.

Landed in Adelaide and were met by Chris and Hannah, it's hot here, 23ish overnight and then are talking temperatures of 39-41 over weekend, fun fun fun, still shouldn't complain in light of nightmares in blighty with snow.

Day Two Hundred and Eight

Wednesday

We got up and went shopping at Chatswood Chase. We then went over to Bill and Carols for dinner which was lovely, chicken stir fry.

We had a Skype call with the folks which was good, it's very cold in UK at mo. Much snow, seems H & P had fun trying to get home from airport!

Tuesday 5 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Seven

Finalised my updated CV today and applied for 1 job and sent a speculative application to another company. Seen another job that's looks interesting which I will apply for in next few days.

Kate went out most of the day visiting an old school friend with Caroline.

Cooked diner this evening and watched telly.

Monday 4 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Six

Was a tough Monday morning, we were up early, Kate was off to her last day at work at the nursing home where she has been covering for somebody over Christmas. Had a quick call tofolks in UK fiorst thing to catch up on all the news. I then spent the day re-writing my CV from scratch, updating Linkedin and generally kick starting the new year with job hunting efforts.

Kate came home and we spent time looking at flights for Adelaide. We are off down there over the coming weekend for Kate's final dress fitting for her Bridesmaid dress for Hannah and Chris wedding in March.

Tomorrow is more job searching and prospective letters to various organisations.

Day Two Hundred and Five

Sunday

A day spent mainly in front of the TV chilling out. We wondered up the shops to get some supplies in and really didn't do too much. We did do lots of things like updating calenders etc and paperwork.

Sorry another short update for today...

Sunday 3 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Four

We got up and went to the beach. Bronte Beach, near Bondi. All was going well until a complete downpour where we all got soaked. We abandoned that idea and came home. Did some shopping and then cooked a meal for Kates folks and Chris and Hannah. Had a great evening including Trivial Pursuit until 1am.

Friday 1 January 2010

Day Two Hundred and Three

January 1st 2010

Awoke late after last nights New Years Eve fun. We drove up to Broadway for some lunch and a bit of shopping, it was pretty quiet up there.

We came home and relaxed and then went to the Cinema this event. We saw Avatar - the new flick by James Cameron, we aw it in 3D. It was pretty good although perhaps a touch too long. We are just home, getting sleep before hitting the beach tomorrow - jeez it's tough in January here...

I've made a few resolutions for the year ahead, get fit, get a job, and a few other things!

Day Two Hundred and Two

December 31st 2009

New Years Eve, we didn't do to much during the day, we went to shops to get some booze in for the evening. Bill, Carol, Chris and Hannah came over just after 7pm and we had a few drinks here, we then went to the Chinese restaurant at the Fish Market for dinner. It was good as being a Chinese restaurant they were not directly celebrating New Year so it was more relaxed and not massively overpriced for the night. We watched the 9pm fireworks on the telly there but could hear the thumps and booms outside and see the smoke. Once we had finished dinner we made our way home and had a more drinks whilst waiting for the new year to arrive. At the stroke of 12 we celebrated and then watched the Sydney fireworks on TV, again within earshot of it all. We decided against trying to battle the 1.5 million people in and around the harbour and watch it on the telly. We had sparklers in the garden though! Next year I expect we'll book a restaurant on Circular Quay or alike.

2009 A Year in Review

I thought I would do a brief review of the year as 2009 comes to a close, I have to say this has been a pretty monumental year in the life of little old Adrian Steward. A year ago, myself, Kate, Rob, Jo, Stu and Cate celebrated the new year in our beloved SW London local restaurant rehab, this was to be the start of a big year.

January A month of work at Nokia, and behind the scenes preparation for our visa application to Australia.

February
More planning and then we took a wonderful holiday to Dubai, this was very relaxing and it was then we got several texts from colleagues letting us know about voluntary resignation packages form work. As we knew we were both to leave in June anyway it was an easy decision to press the button.

March
Our holiday in Dubai continued and it was while sitting next to the most magnificent swimming pool I effectively resigned my job on line and started the ball rolling on the adventure to move our lives down under. I turned 33 at the end of the month.

Dubai

April

And so the the final month of work at Symbian/Nokia, if you can call it that, I lost count of the hours we sat upstairs in the canteen wasting time drinking tea. As the end of the month neared our time came and before I knew it I was was walking out of the office for the last time after almost 10.5 years. we had the mother of all leaving do's on April 29th at EV. We miss our colleagues form London a great deal.

May
And so to May, a month where we finally got our visa approved, this actually came through on the 29th May, just a day before our leaving do in Rehab and 12 days before we were due to fly to Sydney. We also moved out of our flat in Colliers Wood that day as tenants moved in. Also during May we had a wonderful weekend in Ireland, driving around both the North and South and spending quality time with Hazel and the parents before we left for Sydney.

Family Dinner in Temple Bar

June

And so the time came to say goodbye to family and friends and depart for Australia. This was one of the toughest things I've ever done but it was for the right reasons (Kate if anyone is wondering!). I have to thank my parents for making the actual airport parting easy and quick. We arrived into Australia with 2 suitcases each, some money in our back pockets and a whole lot of stuff to do and buy. The last 2 weeks in June, our first 2 in Oz were spent just getting over the whole up heaval, staying at Kate's folks and just getting ourselves grounded.

July

We found a place to rent, and with our our 2 suitcases of possessions started the process of buying everything we need for life. We started buying everything from irons to beds, to furniture to kettles , basically everything. i also got in contact with Oxfam and started my journey of volunteering and working with them here in Australia

August

Much of August was spent volunteering with Oxfam on the trailwalker event, this all came to fruition at the end of the month, it was a blast
!

Managing those pesky volunteers at checkpoint 6

September
More job hunting, house stuff buying etc. We had a trip to Adelaide at the start of the month and shortly after that I took Kate to Fraser Island and proposed to her, she said yes thankfully! She made me the happiest man alive. Soon enough we jumped back on the plane and headed to the UK for Stu & Cates and Anna & Mikes weddings at the end of the month. it was great to see everyone at home and it was then the folks told me they were coming to visit in November, this made laving the UK again a bit easier.

October

Back to Sydney and straight to Melbourne to work for Oxfam for a number of weeks on a contract. This was pretty intense but good event mgt experience. At the end of the month it was back to Sydney and onwards with job searching.

November

Soon enough the folks were on Aussie soil and we spent a lovely few weeks doing stuff with them, including the great ocean road.

December

As the start of the month disappeared it was time for the folks to head back to the UK, the airport experience ins never a pretty one and especially for them heading back to the cold of blighty. Soon enough its Christmas, not that it feels like it in this heat, but it has been a lovely Christmas time surrounded by Kate's wonderful family and friends. I'm sure I've missed of a massive amount of stuff throughout the year, its been a roller coaster, and now 2010 will see us stabilising everything job wise etc before we get married in early 2011.
