Day Four Hundred and Thirteen

Friday A busy day. Had a crap nights sleep coughing, sneezing and generally being full of cold. Dragged myself into work (well it wasn't quite as extreme as that) and spent morning trying to get stuff done. After lunch I went to one of our corporates out in Concord West to do a presentation to them about volunteering. It's the biggest open plan office I have ever been in I think, I estimate about 2000 people in one floor space...it was like a battery farm.

Came straight home from there, so had an early mark.
In the evening we went to see the Magic Numbers at the Metro. The Metro is a great little venue and the numbers were superb. I think they were still a little jet lagged though!

Bought myself a Tee Shirt, I don't often do that but just liked it. Pic of front below.

Day Four Hundred and Twelve

Thursday

I've got a pig of a cold, spent the day at work, sneezing and blowing my nose constantly. How pleasant not! Got a call form one of my corporates late afternoon asking me where I was. They had not actually properly invited me to do the talk to them so it's been rescheduled.

Came home and had a Skype call with folks and sister.

Thought it would be interesting to check out house prices back in London. Interestingly both the flats either side of mine are currently for sale. One is on at 199K, the other at 239K...massive difference. I'll just ride it out for a while longer before selling.

Hope my tenants are not causing everyone to sell up hahaha.

Day Four Hundred and Eleven

Going down with a cold so quick blog...

Busy day at work, spent some time at ANZ doing a presentation to them about volunteering. All went very well. Knocked off at 5.30 and came home as I'm sniffly!

Tuesday 27 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Ten

Second day of course which went pretty well. Learnt a lot from it. Wen tot office after that to get a few things done. Met Kate at Central and we came home together.

Pack form parents arrived OK today, good to read what they are up to over there.

Tomorrow I'm training one of our corporate volunteer groups, presenting to 20 plus people. Guess I should finalise the PowerPoint's in the morning!

Monday 26 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Nine

Monday

(uni tech Sydney) so had to be on an Up early as I'm on a two day course on Event Risk Management, OH& S (elf n safety) at the UTSearly train. It's really interesting and useful in my work at Oxfam on Trailwalker.

After the first day finished at 5, I got soaked walking back to the office and then did a couple of hours work before coming home.

I'm studying my course here

http://www.business.uts.edu.au/acem/index.html

although my actual course isn't listed.

Sunday 25 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Eight

Sunday

A lazy morning.

Afternoon was spent doing lots of mundane things like washing etc. We went of a walk in the park in afternoon which was nice.

Had a Skype call with folks and spent evening in front of TV watching Masterchef final.

Next two days I'm on a training course.

Day Four Hundred and Seven

Saturday

Got up and went into work for four hours. Got a lot of things done without distraction.

Came home and we went shopping for food. We invited Bill and Carol over and I attempted to cook a Beef Wellington. It came out OK but was a b#gger to serve and fell to bits and I was a bit disappointed with it.

We watched the Sherlock Holmes movie with Jude Law/Robert Downey Jr in, was OK but a bit long for my liking.

Friday 23 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Six

Friday!

Up and into work on the 8.25 today, not bad, been slacking in the mornings recently when it comes to making the train.

Busy day allocating folks and stuffing packs. Sorted out a laptop for my corporate training days in the next few weeks.

Kate nipped to Willoughby in evening to pick up our Amazon delivery for UK. Got the new Bill Bryson book which I'm excited about.

Met back in Newtown and we went to Botany pub for dinner with Caroline.

Going into work tomorrow to get ahead.

Day Four Hundred and Five

Thursday

Busy day at work but got lots done.

Drove over to Willoughby in the evening for dinner

Wednesday 21 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Four

Bit of a mare of a day undoing mistakes that had been made, but it was all good in the end. Was about the 4th day in a row Ive been there to about 7pm. Still really enjoying so its all good.

Came home and Skyped folks.

Not a great deal else to report.

We will very soon fill any remaining paces with second shift allocations so watch this space for more emails from us.

Supporting our walkers on the trail

This year more than ever we really want to ensure our volunteers really encourage the walkers on the trail, please cheer them on, giving them a friendly wave and words of encouragement. The power and effects of volunteers on our walkers cannot be underestimated. I asked Elly, a walker from last year to write a few words on the impact the volunteers of 2009 had on her, it’s an inspiring read copied below for you.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done”, explained an ex-marine we met during our fundraising sausage sizzle. “It’s not a physical challenge, it’s a mental one”, he went on to explain. And as first-time Trailwalkers in 2009, team 404 eventually learned exactly what that meant.

By the time Event Weekend dawns, you’ve trained your muscles, fine-tuned your nutrition and hydration, and packed clothing for every possible weather scenario. But what you’re not prepared for is the way you’ll feel out there on the trail as each of those increasingly challenging hours unfolds.

Because you’ve never actually walked the whole 100km, you can’t image how you’ll feel at 4am, when dawn is still too distant and so is the next checkpoint, but you’re willing yourself forward on the knowledge that one of them, eventually, must make an appearance. Or when you walk away from a checkpoint, leaving a precious team-member behind in the first aid tent, knowing they’ve given their all, but just can’t go another step. Or perhaps, worst of all, when you’ve got 80km behind you and the end is tantalisingly, mockingly close, but every step sends fire through your legs and your mind is repeating the mantra ‘I’m not going to make it, I’m not going to make it’.

These are the times when you dig into your deepest reserves and when a single word from a volunteer on the trail can suddenly lift you back up and make you believe: ‘Yes, I can do this’.

Every time we heard ‘keep going’, ‘you’re doing so well’, ‘not long to go’, our weary steps briefly became lighter, we gained a little more belief in ourselves and we were reminded of what an extraordinary thing we were doing.

So don’t underestimate the power of a smile to us lonely walkers. We may be surrounded by our faithful team mates, but we’re each fighting our own private battles in our minds and have lost the strength to encourage each other. We need your words and gestures as to help us raise our heads to the horizon, see the finish line and restore our belief in reaching it. We couldn’t do it without you.

Until next time....

So that’s it for this time but please watch out for another Volunteer Newsletter in your inbox in the next couple of weeks with further updates!

In the meantime if you need to contact us you can email us at xxxxx or call xxxxxx

Once again THANKYOU so much for supporting Oxfam TRAILWALKER in 2010

Met Kate at Central and we waited 30 minutes for a train due to signal failures. Very reminiscent of London Underground, plus it was wet and bloody cold.

We drove to Marickville Metro and did a big shop hahaha.

Was sent a link to add to blog by Neil but Facebook wont let me get it so I cant add it here.

Monday 19 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and Two

Monday again!

Had a really good morning at work, 250 volunteer packs packed and almost ready to go. Ploughed on with lots of other things too. Didnt leave work until just before 7pm. Time flies when you are having fun.

Met Kate at Central and we came home to a chicken and pasta dinner.

No other news today

Sunday 18 July 2010

Day Four Hundred and One

Awoken with breakfast which was great, we then got up and headed to Davidson Park in Frenchs Forestas I needed to take a picture or two for Trailwalker materials. Kate made a lovely model in a florescent vest!

Came back to Newtown and we walked to Michael and Bens house to watch AFL game and had a BBQ. Nice weather for a winters day.

Came home and had a disrupted Skype call with folks due to bandwidth issues.

And just like that the weekend has disappeared again!

Saturday 17 July 2010

Day Four Hundred

Another century milestone!

Awoken again by the pesky builders in shop downstairs drilling so loudly the flat shook. Seems they only work Saturday am.

We spent as lot of the day doing wedding planning, we have a big old to do list, handily in excel with dates and responsibilities. Lots to do but all good fun.

We grabbed a quick drink with Caroline at the Botany and then drove over to Bill and Carols for dinner. Staying here tonight.

In other significant news the Prime Minister has called an Election here for 21st August. So we now have 6 weeks of political campaigning to listen to.

Still at least it does not clash with Trailwalker Sydney, it would have been a nightmare!

Friday 16 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Nine

Friday

Printed about a million bits of paper at work today, still sets me up for sending out volunteers packs next week.

Came home and chilled out this evening in front of TV.

Seems very cold in Sydney today.

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Eight

Thursday

A usual day at work, much debate about whether there will be an election called, this could cause some issues to TW10, lets see.

In the evening we went to the Rose for the pub quiz. Had a crap dinner there which took forever as the kitchen seemed to be in chaos.

Came home and had a Skype call with folks and sister, very amusing watching them all bicker on the video.

Wednesday 14 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Seven

Wednesday

Ran for train this morning to catch up with Kate who was ahead of me, just made it! Usual day at work, printed about 1200 pages of stuff today...so much for preserving the planet!

Came home and we had dinner at the Botany.

Only this type of thing happens down under

An interesting article about Aussie politics too

Tuesday 13 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Six

Tuesday

Usual day at work, lots done tying up loose ends on lots of things.

Had a Skype call with Chris and Hannah this evening.

Not much else to report really!

Monday 12 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Five

A good day at work, it feels very much like the event is getting closer and closer.

Worked a bit late and met Kate at Central to get train home together.

Spent evening writing lists of everything we have to do!

Sunday 11 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Four

Sunday

We got up and Kate cooked Scones for morning tea. Bill and Carol joined and we had good chats before heading off to watch Swans at SCG. A good win. We took to the carpark to come home and Bill had to bail to walk directly to work. Nightmare trying to get out of Car Park.

Caroline and Kate had drinks at Botany before Kate came home and we had dinner and relaxed for rest of evening.

Saturday 10 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Three

Saturday

Woken up by extremely loud hammer drilling from shop fit out downstairs....both made us grumpy!

A lazy morning at home and then off to shops to stock up on supplies having hot been at home much for ages.

We came home and hung out and then met Caroline for a couple of drinks at Botany. Came home and had a good Skype catch up with folks.

Cooked ourselves a nice dinner (made our own pesto), had a quick call with Bill and Carol and wasted rest of day in front of TV!

Friday 9 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety Two

Friday

A good day at work catching up on everything. Came home and then we met our friends Steve (who we used to work with at Symbian in London) and his wife Val for a quick drink as they were in Newtown.

They also invited us for a weekend at his parents farm in Lower Hunter valley in a few weekends time which should be nice.

Came home and had some dinner and got some time in the flat, seems like ages since we have been here!

Day Three Hundred and Ninety One

Thursday

Away from hotel by 7.30am and drove 50 mins to airport, traffic slowed us up. Took a nice and empty Virgin Blue flight back to Sydney and was kindly met by Bill who dropped me at the office. This meant I didn't need to drag my monster bag around on trains as I was heading to Willoughby after work anyway.

Afternoon at work and then took train to Willoughby and was met by Kate at Artarmon. So good to see her again after 4 days apart.

Dinner in Willoughby with Bill and Carol and then home to Newtown. Felt like I had not been at home for months after trips to Darwin and Brisbane in quick succession!

Wednesday 7 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ninety

Wednesday 7th July

More of the same, although we checked out of the place we were staying first thing. I dropped my colleagues off at the top of another section and they walked most of the day. I wondered around other potential checkpoint sites during the day and drove many Km's.

Had a quick drive round Brisbane too and stopped in a big shopping centre for lunch.

Picked the others up and we checked into last nights accommodation in city centre near (Fortitude Vally) the Oxfam Brisbane office. Had a chance to go and visit the office and say hello.

We then went out for dinner at a suburb of the city called West End.

Back to hotel and bed for an early start to Airport and return to Sydney.

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Nine

Tuesday 6th July

Another early start and more checking out of potential event sites. Lots of walking and driving and taking of pictures. Back to accommodation for showers etc and then we went out for a curry dinner and spent time reviewing our findings.

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Eight

Monday 5th July

Up early, at breakfast at 7.30 and on the road by 8am. We looked at potential start location for event and then walked forever. I walked 4km up a 40 degree hill it seemed, very hard going. I then split from the others and walked another 4km to a potential checkpoint. Very hard going and strange wondering around the Aussie bush alone!

Met back up with the others late afternoon and drove back down the mountain. Went out for a Japanese dinner and off to bed early.

Sunday 4 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Seven

Sunday 4th July

We got up and sorted ourselves out at Willoughby. We then drove to Newtown to get some stuff for me before heading to the airport. We went to the airport primarily to pick up Bill and Carol from their trip to Adelaide but also to drop me off so I could fly up top Brisbane.

Oxfam asked me to go up there and help them asses the potential of running our event up there. My task during the trip will be to look at the potential checkpoints.

our Met my boss at the departure gate and we flew up on an easy 1hr 5 minute flight. Met our other colleague from Melbourne there and picked up the hire car (a sporty Holden SV6). Checked intoaccommodation and off to bed.

Saturday 3 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Six

Awoken early by the dog jumping on the bed and promptly falling asleep and snoring for hours. Finally dragged ourselves out of bed at 10am. Took the dog to the park for a walk and then came home and went to local cafe for lunch.

In the afternoon we got all domesticated and cooked banana bread for brekkie tomorrow.

We had a good call with Adelaide gang.

This evening we went to see Toy Story 3 at the movies, for a kids movies it's pretty scary at times. We grabbed a quick pasta dinner at the Gourmet Pasta Kitchen in Chatswood.

Had a friend request on facebook form martin Rossiter, the lead singer of the band Gene from the 90's, pretty weird but that's what you get for joining groups on facebook, still I have a famous friend now!

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Five

Friday

Dropped Kate over to St Leonard's then drove and parked at work. We have the worlds trickiest car park at work I can tell you.

Got a fair bit done at work, including prep for next week and then drove back and picked up Kate. We cooked ourselves a spag bol, skyped the folks and then did not much else in the evening.

Thursday 1 July 2010

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Four

Thursday

Back to reality, back to work early doors to try and catch up on everything. Got a lot done and then headed home. Threw a load of stuff intothe car and drove to St leonards to get kate. We are house/pet sitting for next 3 days while Bill and Carol are in Adelaide.

Arrived to a very excitabl cat and dog, had our dinner and caught up on some recorded TV.

Day Three Hundred and Eighty Three

Wednesday

We got up around 8.30 and finished off our packing. At 10 we shipped out of the apartment and made our way to Penny and Johns to say goodbye to Penny (Anna's mum). After that we drove to Anna's place for lunch. Was very nice and then it was time to say goodbye to her.

Once that was done it was off to airport.

We got ourselves all checked in and made our way through to departures. All too soon it was time to say goodbye to Hazel, these moments are never easy and it's to know what to say. A tearful goodbye and she was off through to international departures.

It was funny both our planes pushed back almost together, I watched as her Jetstar flight took her off to Singapore and then we took off back to Sydney.

Back to Sydney and the cold, we were picked up by Carol and made our way back home and bed.
