Day Three Hundred and Twenty Two

Friday!

Good progress at work. Went to bank at lunchtime, I'm consistently impressed with the personal service you get in the Comm Bank, called by my first name and chatted to.

Came home and had a nice Skype call with folks, had a Chinese for dinner.

Big weekend of Sports, BBQs and dinners ahead.

Thursday 29 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Twenty One

Sat at work and sent out almost a thousand emails to past Trailwalker volunteers. Trying to re-recruit them form the previous 2 years, I hope that had good experiences and want to come back.

Left work at about 6 and took train into city to meet Kate to do some late night shopping.

We both got tired by about 7.45 and headed home for food.

Glad it's Friday tomorrow, its only a short week but feels like it has dragged on for ages.

Day Three Hundred and Twenty

Wednesday

A good day at work, got lots done and prepped myself for a big day tomorrow.

Came home and cooked pasta for dinner. Had a Skype call with Chris and Hannah in Adelaide.

Not much else to report!

Tuesday 27 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Nineteen

A rude awakening, Tuesday felt like Monday and we struggled to drag ourselves out of bed.

Took ourselves off to work and earned some $$$. Not much to report from work, much of the same trying to recruit 700 plus volunteers for the event in August.

Came home and we went to Marrickville Metro for some bits and pieces. Before we knew it its late and time for bed again. Where do the days go?...

Monday 26 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Eighteen

A public holiday in Lieu of Anzac day yesterday.

We spent it doing a final push unpacking stuff in the flat. We went out for lunch up King Street and then came back again and carried on.

Cooked ourselves dinner in the evening and watched DVDs this evening.

Back to work tomorrow!

Day Three Hundred and Seventeen

We went shopping in town, Kate spent up on new pairs of boots and we invested in a mobile data card for the mac. We now have legitimate wireless connection. After town we drove to Willoughby for dinner.

We were also sorting out some of Kate's stuff in the loft there and Kate managed to put her foot slightly through the bathroom ceiling. Very reminiscent of me doing the same in Colliers Wood on day we were moving out last year!

It's easily fixed though.

Had a good Skype call with folks, very nice to see them face to face again rather than just on voice call.

Saturday 24 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Sixteen

Woke up aching!

A result of doing too much of this yesterday...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2299/2225933328_fb9a797590.jpg?v=0

We got up early and headed over to Everleigh Market to get some fresh fruit and veg. It's a bit like Borough market where local producers sell their wares. Was very nice I have to say.

http://www.eveleighmarket.com.au/

Came home and then went to the paper shop in Enmore, we were getting inspiration for wedding invite/table stuff. Bought some samples and then came home again.

Not long after that we jumped on train again (getting the value out of our weekly tickets) and headed to SCG to watch Swans play. They won again.

jumped on bus home as it started to rain and spent a quiet night at home.

Day Three Hundred and Fifteen

Got up early and took a train to Turramurra in the North. Met a colleague and we then took train from Berowra to Cowan. We were set to walk section 2 of the trail (Trailwalker trail). This is a 15km walk through the bush.

I can tell you when they mean the bush they mean the bush. Walked sections up and down 200m in height. Covered some dangerous terrain, full respect to the trail walkers.

After 7.5km we called it a day, we were both broken and my knees were crunching, not good.

We hitchhiked the 10 minute journey back to our car, Ive never hitched in my life and ended up in a car with a wedding celebrant. She was nice enough but not sure she'll get our business.

Met Kate in North Sydney after we had done a quick visit to all of our checkpoints to measure stuff. Kate and I took train home.

In the evening didn't do much, was totally knackered!

Thursday 22 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Fourteen

Ran for the the train this morning and just made it, I'm figuring out how fine I can cut it, I reckon it's a minute and a half tops if walking fast from lounge to platform.

Spent day at work learning more of our systems.

Came home and picked up car and drove to Willoughby which took over an hour in rush hour, not much fun. Had a nice dinner and dessert.

Tomorrow I'm walking a section of the trail, 12.5km in fact, should be interesting!

Day Three Hundred and Thirteen

A day at work, not a great deal to report, it's all going good.

An evening at home and a call with folks.

We have limited internet coverage (how rude that the wireless we are squatting on is intermittent, so in process of getting ourselves hooked up) so my blog updates might be intermittent too.

Tuesday 20 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Twelve

Tuesday

Another day in the office, had a few meetings and got on with my planning. Came home and drove to the local shopping centre, the Marrickville Metro, have to say its pretty crap, shabby horrible place. Broadway may keep our business.

Beautiful blue sky days here in Sydney, nice temperatures too.

Day Three Hundred and Eleven

Back to the Sydney office, spent much of the day catching up on emails and thinking about all the Melbourne things we can improve on in Sydney event.

Came home and had dinner and watched TV.

Not a great deal to report for Monday really!

Monday 19 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Ten

Sunday 18/4

Up at 8 and drove back to control centre. Helped along with everyone in final pack down. At about 11am we were all set and headed back to Melbourne in convoy. I was driving a van.

Spent lots of time at Kennards unpacking and then back to office briefly to do expenses etc.

Soon enough we were in a taxi back to airport. Flight back was fine, managed to get myself upgraded to front of plane so had 3 seats to myself which was nice.

Met Kate at baggage carousel, was so nice to see her again.

Came home and she cooked me a lovely pasta dinner. Had a skype call with folks and then hit the bed for much needed sleep.

Day Three Hundred and Nine

Saturday 17/4

Slept in until lunchtime after getting back form nightshift at about 6.30. Was meant to spend the day at hotel but got call at about 2.30 that event was running ahead and we could start bumping out checkpoint 6 at the local school.

Jumped in car and picked up a van from event control centre and headed over to school. Packed everything down and headed back to control.

Spent a lot of time (despite meant to be off) starting the loading up of one of our large trucks in readiness for departure tomorrow to Melbourne.

Went back to hotel at about 11pm

Day Three Hundred and Eight

Friday 16/4

Up and about and setting up the Finish line in the morning with more flying around in the van finalising urban signage. Also ended up completing the rest stop point which was in a stunning location as shown in pics below.

Went back to Birchwood to sleep in afternoon for a few hours before doing the night shift in control centre as Volunteer Coordinator. That ran until 6.15 am.

Day Three Hundred and Seven

Thursday 15/4 Another 5.30am start , up to the office for 6.15am having dragged all my stuff from the Milano apartments in the early morning air to Oxfam office on Leicester Street. Drove to Jells Park where the start is to start doing Urban signage.

Urban signage involves placing signage along parts of the trial to give walkers direction, warn them about dangers etc. Not the greatest job in the world during rush hour especially pulling up on hard shoulder of motorways etc. but hey ho.

The afternoon was spent building Checkpoint 3, this is at a fantastic location called Grants Picnic Ground.

http://www2.oxfam.org.au/trailwalker/pdf/OAus-TWMelbCP3ToCP4Maps-0909.pdf

Here there are wild parrots and Gullahs which feed, much like pigeons in Trafalgar Square as a tourist draw. The birds are obviously far nicer than the disease ridden flying rats of W1.

http://www.grantsonsherbrooke.com.au/

Pictures of our build and the birds are below
After the build drove back to the start and then to accommodation near the Finish.

This wasn't the nicest place Ive ever stayed, and was a dorm style place ad was cold!

Day Three Hundred and Six

Wednesday 14/4

Got up at 5.25am and was at the office at 6am. Then drove myself and Carrie (Melbourne TW Logistics Coordinator) to Checkpoint 6 to do the bump in all day.

The location is here

Ive added pictures below of the build.

7am

Build gets underway

Coming along

Finished...

We left there in the afternoon and drove the hour or so back to Melbourne and back to the office. Worked there doing last minute things until about 11pm. A long day all in all but our last one in the city before we head out on the trail for rest of the week.

Day Three Hundred and Five

Tuesday 13/4

An early start and off to West Melbourne and beyond to pick up trucks and cars. Got a lecture off the car hire bloke about not transferring my license to an Aussie one, he finally understood when I explained about 6 month time period in NSW after arriving or coming back into country. I should get it changed now though.

Got to drive a big ford Ute for the day, a proper one with a crew cab and everything. Just needed the cattle dog on back and I'd have been right mate (as they say down here).

Spent the afternoon in the Kennards warehouse packing some of the trucks we picked up earlier. Had a Thai takeaway in the office in the evening, back home to bed.

Day Three Hundred and Four

Monday 12/4

On the 9.15 flight from Sydney to Melbourne, arrived in Melbourne just before 11 and we grabbed a taxi to the hotel. We tried to check in but room wasn't ready so we dumped gear and headed to the office in Leicester St.

Met the rest of the Trailwalker team and caught up with some folks form when I did the Changecourse logistics late last year.

stuff. We then went to the Spent the afternoon getting stuff ready for the event, from sorting out mobile phones to printingKennards store nearby to start sorting the stored stock out.

In the evening we had a vegetarian meal which was really good (not far from the Italian place where folks and I went when they were here.

http://www.shakahari.com.au/

Back to hotel and sleep.

Sunday 11 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Three

A day of shopping...firstly a trip to Anaconda to buy a gag to take to Melbourne, secondly a trip[ to Ikea to buy more furniture to put our ever expanding pile of stuff into.

We had a good Skype calls with both Hazel and folks and really had a big push on finally getting settled in the new place.

I'm off to Melbourne for a week now so my blog updates may very well be sporadic...

Have a good week all

Saturday 10 April 2010

Day Three Hundred and Two

The mother of all hangovers....

Woke up with a stinking headache!

Got up and went and helped Kates Cousin Fiona (with Bill) try and get a small wardrobe into her new house. The plan was to simply haul it over balcony on robes, it proved too heavy, difficult and dangerous to try that so we had to dissemble it in the end.

Kate, Carol and Caroline went to the bridal expo in Darling Harbour.

Slept a bit in the afternoon and then we headed over to the Swans game at SCG in the evening (they won) and came home for more sleep (well needed!)

Day Three Hundred and One

Friday

A good day at work, got lots done and all prepped for a week in Melbourne assisting on their event.

Birthday. Was really good night although we Came home and in the evening we went to Kings Cross to help celebrate Michael Fletchers 40thdidn't leave Kings X until 3am having drunk far too much. Had the worlds talkative cabbie in way home too.

We were drinking in Kings Cross Hotel which has changed a lot since I was last there in 2002. Had a 3 year renovation apparently.

Friday 9 April 2010

Day Three Hundred

The blog reaches it's tri century.

Third day at work, all good, spent most of day getting more into the job and planning my strategy to recruit 700 volunteers.

Came home and unpacked a few more boxes before Kate got home.

We had dinner in Willoughby to drop a load of things off there, but we we were home by 10.30.

Wednesday 7 April 2010

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Nine

Wednesday

Took the train and tram over to Glebe for key handover and final inspection with real estate agent. Was very quick, even got a comment it was cleaner than when we moved in.

Took tram to Surry Hills and into work for day two. Spent day getting myself organised and starting to get into the job a lot more.

Came home (took 14 minutes) had some dinner and unpacked a bit more. Had a Skype call with folks.

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Eight

First day of work at Oxfam. Was good to be back in the office catching up with people and getting on with the job at hand. Had training in the afternoon and spent most of the day reading.

In the evening we went to Glebe for final clean before inspection before tomorrow. At 10pm we realised our spare keys were in Willoughby so we had to trek over there to get them. Got to bed at 11.

This is event I'm working on

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Seven

Monday

http://www.eastershow.com.au/

Kate and I went to the Royal Easter Show today at Homebush. I could best compare it to a country fete in the UK on a big scale. Apparently the tag line is the 'The Country comes to the City' well that's the case, its a lot of animals on show, baking competitions, arts and crafts etc.
The other significant aspect is 'Show Bags' basically cheap advertising for companies, they fill a bag with all thier products and sell it at a bargain price to try and get you hooked on thier product. There were literally thousands of people filing into the Showbag Pavillion.

The Easter Show was crazy people wise, just far too many everywhere.
We caught the train back back to Flemington where we had parked and came home. Spoke to folks, had a a healthy dinner and unpacked a few more boxes.

Tomorrow I start work at Oxfam.

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Six

Sunday

We got up and went to Glebe and packed up the very last few things there. We spent lots of time cleaning the place.

We came back to Newtown and unloaded and then went to Willoughby to watch the AFL. We still have no Foxtel here in Newtown.

We came back to Newtown early evening and then later on we went to Ben and Michael's and played an interesting board game called Colosseum. Once you get your head round it its quite good fun.

Got home about 12.45am.

Saturday 3 April 2010

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Five

If we ever move again, and we will, we are hiring people to move stuff, I'm done with moving boxes...full stop.

I got up at 7.45 and was in Glebe by 8.30 dismantling drawers and shifting stuff downstairs so we could get the carpets steam cleaned in the afternoon ( a stipulation of the real estate agent on vacating).

Drove back to Newtown for 10 and unloaded car again.

Kate and I then drove back to Glebe around lunchtime, grabbed some lunch and loaded the car again.

We then set about cleaning the place and being around while the fella cleaned the carpets with the noisiest machine ever.

Back to Newtown, unloaded the car again, reloaded it with empty boxes and came over to Willoughby for dinner and a movie.

Back to Newtown and bed shortly.

Just noticed on the BBC website it's the boat race weekend, go on Cambridge, I'll be a little sad not to be able to watch it live. We have a clock change here tonight too...time diff to UK back to +11.

Friday 2 April 2010

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Four

God Bless people who don't secure their wireless networks, I'm hijacking someone else's internet connection here at the new flat.

Today we moved a load more stuff to the flat, I would say we now officially live in Newtown rather than Glebe.

We had Bill and Carol packign up our kitchen in Glebe whilst we packed up the bedroom. We loaded both cars up and headed to Newtown. We unloaded and then grabbed some lunch on King St.

http://www.eatability.com.au/au/sydney/buzzzbar/

We came home (to Newtown) and Bill and Carol left. We spent more time getting the place sorted and then nipped out to grab some dinner. A quick Thai.

We've relaxed in front of TV tonight watching DVD's.

Thursday 1 April 2010

Day Two Hundred and Ninety Three

Thursday

A day of moving furniture between Glebe and Newtown. I was up and about early dismantlinglast of the big furniture ready for our move. I drove to Alexandria and picked up the van I had hired, well actually I got a free upgrade to a truck with a tail lift as the guy with the transit I had hired hadn't bothered to return it. I'm all for a free upgrade if it makes my life easier.

Drove back to Glebe and waited for Bill to arrive who was helping me. Once he was there I pulled the truck up out back and we started the loading. All went very smoothly, we dropped the bed off the front balcony on ropes again, all very smooth.

Once loaded we drove to Newtown, thankfully there is 2 hour parking on King Street out the front of our place so we parked right next to the front door. Took us about an hour to unload all the gear into the flat.

Once done we drove to Glebe and picked up a load of stuff to store at Willoughby, again we unloaded fairly easily and before I knew it I was dropping truck back before 5pm.

Then drove back to Newtown to turn off aircon I had left on, then to Glebe to pick up some stuff for staying at Willoughby over night, then final drive to Willoughby.

Had a Skype call with folks.

Carol did a superb steak dinner and after not long hut the sack because we were all knackered.

A day of reflection and celebration for the lovely Marion.
